If You Could Be Mine by Sara Farizan – 4 Stars (Rounded up)

This book depicted forbidden love in Iran – that of two teenage girls who live in a country where homosexuality is illegal, and there are severe punishments if caught, although the government supports and endorses sex reassignment operations. The focus of the book is on Sahar, and how far she is willing to go for the girl she loves. It was a short, quick read, but there was real character depth, especially for Sahar, and a realistic ending. This debut-novel has a fresh narrative, and it was interesting to get a snap-shot view of life inside Iran.
