Hi Michelle - that's fine with me! I think we were gonna aim to check in every 10/15% or so. Welcome to the read! Ben

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) Hi Ben and Michelle,
I finally found the link....lol. I'll post my updates here and on my book page. Can't wait to see what both of you have to say too.

Michelle | 307 comments I'm at 25%, somewhere in chapter 9 (reading on my kindle)

Not a spoiler: the author's description of hypothermia in this chapter is probably the best I've ever read. I live on the east coast of Canada so I've always been very aware of the signs and symptoms of hypothermia, but my anxiety steadily grew throughout the description. Very impressive. I'm really enjoying the book :)

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) I've been reading since Monday so I'm a bit further along than you Michelle and I'm not sure where Ben's at since he hasn't posted here. I just finished chapter 16, page 106. I don't know what type of kindle you have Michelle, but I know on mine, I can go home, still in the book and hit the Aa which takes you to themes, font, layout and more. In more you can set up the settings for page numbers, then save settings and pop back to the book if you want the page number showing at the bottom. I'll wait till you catch up with me before saying anything more about the book. And hopefully Ben will let us know where he is. p.s. send me a friend request if you want to.

Benjamin Cross | 16 comments Hi Both,
Ooh I've got a bit of catching up to do! I'm at 15%, so Chapter 5. We've got a 4 day weekend (national holiday) over here this weekend though, so plenty of opportunity.

My thoughts so far - I'm enjoying it. I thought the writing was very matter-of-fact at first, but I quite like it as it's crisp and to-the-point.

I'm genuinely intrigued by whatever's down this drill hole, and the mystery of the psyche evaluations too! I think the author's building that side of it up really well and leading me along by the hand.

I like Mary, though I don't feel overly close to her just yet (I'm not far in yet though tbf, so it's early days). Not sure what to make of Schuller...evil...good...genius...mad... He's an interesting characer.

Ben

Michelle | 307 comments Good afternoon!
I'm at 50%, page 96, beginning chapter 16. (I told your advice Kara and added the page number to my kindle. Thanks for that!)

I'm enjoying the beginning of the four day weekend too, so woohoo!

I like the crispness of the writing as well. The setting is intriguing, and the characters are really starting to come into focus. I think Mary is a good protagonist. She's calm and controlled in a wild environment. I growing quite fond of her.

The plot is just starting to get weird :) So I'm excited to see where it goes.

Benjamin Cross | 16 comments Do you know what's hiding beneath the ice by 50%, Michelle? Or are you still guessing??

Michelle | 307 comments still guessing. But there is a lot more hints by 50%

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) Hi to both of you,
I didn't read any yesterday hoping 1 or both of you would catch up to me, but not yet.
I'm at page 126, 71%, beginning of Chapter 22. I agree with the writing style of the author being crisp and forthright. As I've gotten further along we still don't know what's come up out of the hole, but everyone's been exposed to it and it's effecting each person differently. I'll leave it at that.

Michelle | 307 comments Hi Kara and Ben!

I'm on page 135, 70%, just finished chapter 22.

I'm really enjoying Mary and (view spoiler)

I've always been a big fan of 'isolation in the snow' horror. I think I'm going to read Who Goes There? soon. It's been unread on my shelf for too long.

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) To Ben and Michelle,
I've waited for you both to catch up, but today I finished the book.
I'll leave it at that and put my review on Goodreads plus my other places today and watch to see what either of you have to say.
I will state that Underneath was a well written book. The author took me into some interesting twists and turns, especially in the last 25% of the book.
Kara

Michelle | 307 comments I finished last night and was really impressed.

I thought the writing was had a great flow. I had to keep forcing myself to put it down or else I would have neglected everyday life to continue reading.

I loved the unique take on the old idea of horror in Antarctica, and I thought the Mary character really shined toward the end.

The story definitely took a dark turn toward the end but it felt organic to me. I never felt like the author was trying to shock me simply for the sake of shock.

Overall, this is a book that needs more buzz! I think it would have allure to a various range of readers.

I'll be excited to hear your thoughts Ben.

Benjamin Cross | 16 comments Hi Both - I finished!! Sorry I’m not as speedy as you guys, but i hardly seem able to leave work atm, so struggled a bit. Anyway, so here are my thoughts.

I really enjoyed it. It was a good length and the chapters were snappy. I also thought it was well written. I connected with Mary and also Bill; I loved the ‘biscuits’ thread, and thought it was a great way to finish up. Suspense? Check. Gore? Check. Mystery? Check.

Probably the main issue I had was that I wish the author had made more of the spark. I found the concept intriguing, but it seemed like the crew only lived with it for a couple of short days before boom, it all kicked off and nearly everybody got killed. Personally, I could’ve done with a bit more build up to the finale, which I thought was horrifyingly good. I guess I felt like I never quite had time to understand what the spark actually is - extraterrestrial? Chemical? Animal? Supernatural Metaphorical? How did it figure for you guys? Ben

Michelle | 307 comments That's a really good point, Ben.

I took the spark mostly at face value--that it's a 'lost' subatomic particle. Probably created at the big bang and helped creation millions of years ago, long before humans. But it disappeared as the ice took over. And now that's it's been released, it is attaching itself its new environment (the humans) and changed them. Or maybe adapted them is better term--changing both itself and its host in kind of a microbial symbioses.
Yes, I know, not super scientific... lol, but, you know.

What did think? Something a little more original?

message 17: by Kara (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kara (ladykarasgmailcom) I personally felt the same way about the "spark", something long buried back in the ice age that covered Antarctica. When they dug down deep enough those who weren't grasping for it, received it.
I agree that more people need to look into the book. It covered everything I look for in a good horror novel.
