That looks like such fun! I'm glad you two got to meet IRL.
If my son decides to try out for Juilliard, perhaps we could meet somewhere around there if I am his transportation (my son, Theresa and I--but also Sallys if she is handy!) could meet. He is a gentleman and enjoys talking with people of all ages. Not a huge reader, but has read some good books and loves classical music.
He has to do his auditions and applications next year and it's time to specialize in schools with strong orchestra programs--where the h*** has the time gone?

I have been refreshing all weekend and all day to get Jaden a vaccine and I am throwing in the towel, let me tell you! Can I just say, what the hell is wrong with Massachusetts?
However, my second dose is Friday morning. Happy to get that over with let me tell you.

I get my 2nd on May 1st. I think one of my first things might be going into downtown Seattle and actually seeing where my office and desk is!

Another breakfast fan :) ! It never ceases to amaze me how some people barely eat anything for breakfast.

I pre-registered all of us last week and have heard NOTHING back.

For whatever reason, first thing in the morning I am never very hungry. Maybe if I never ate after dinner, that would change things! But even as a kid, I wasn't much of a breakfast eater. When I was working, I didn't like to spend the time, so I would wait till I got to work and eat while working or even a couple hours later on morning break. I was surprised how many other people did that, including some who were fixing toast or more elaborate foods for themselves.

I can't handle food until I have been up and moving for a couple of hours. Always been that way, even as a young child. Just my metabolism. I love breakfast all day in part because I can't face it at early hours.

My husband and I got our invitations to register today, so are now set for next week but due to our schedules, not even on the same day. Our 20 something kids have not yet heard. My husband isn't thrilled at the drive since it's over 40 miles round trip so it will really cut into his work even though he was able to get the second earliest slot (but he often starts work at 8 am), but of course he'll get it done so he can eventually visit his mother. She's 96 and is fading--normally he's there about every second month, but hasn't been since October or November (when all were in A-1 health).

Excellent. If he applies and does a pre-audition, and if he gets a second audtion and if it's in person, we'll let you know. Of course, if he gets in with ample scholarships fully remotely, we can plan another time since of course I'll probably be the one to help him move in :)
Thankfully, for various reasons, my kids have done all, mostly or partly merit scholarships (and for one, extra financial aid). We realize that this is a privilege. But my son requires something if he is going to go directly into grad school, so we'll see what opens up. He's been really happy where he has been doing his undergraduate degree. Fabulous trumpet teachers and it's more like a family at that college than at most. This is not likely to happen again.

Oh, sure. No touring schools until he gets a live audition or is accepted if they are far away. He toured Juilliard when he was 15 on the way to tour the Manhattan School of Music for my middle daughter who ended up choosing visual arts. He already knows NEC very well from his time in the prep program.
By the way, I haven't been on here regularly with this 2 week reading game, but have you announced next year's college plans for your son? With my spring migraines I might have even read it and forgotten. I do remember that he's been accepted into a number of wonderful schools.

Sally, it is a date. Sometime in May. I will pm you email and mobile.
I have been craving steak frites au poivre at Rue 57 for weeks. They have outdoor dining too.

Youngest niece opted to stay in Texas and continue remote learning (she's a sophomore at Univ of Chicago) because ... she's eligible for the vaccine in Texas but not in Illinois. She's gotten her first shot and will have the second on May 1. She'll stay in Tx for two weeks, taking in big brother's graduation on May 8 and then head back up to CHI fully vaccinated.

How long does he have? As I recall, May 1 is a popular date to have to make your decision known.
He did very well indeed! It's weird how colleges accept and reject students, but sometimes safety schools say no to some exceptional kids.
My kids had their decisions made easier for various reasons, but one had some disappointments (one didn't bother applying to more than one school at a time but in her transfer school she has amazing grades--better than high school, but as she has said, she is mostly taking classes easy for her now).

Wine, plenty of wine. Scotch too is good.

My strong recommendation based not only on personal experience but talking with college students and other parents (but of course, this is not up to me) is to visit in person because virtual tours, which my kids also did along with visiting, is not the same. Ideally if you can talk to students and not just the tour guides (the tour guides just LOVE everything! They like to please parents as well as students! Their school rules!!!!).
Teens are less likely to transfer if they have visited a campus and talked with students, although the latter is very difficult at the moment with Covid.
But of course, teens will do what they will do :)--all of mine did by that age.

Same for me. I lived in Philadelphia and chose Carleton College in Minnesota based on info in a college guide book. I did go to a local recruiting meeting where they showed a short film of the campus and answered questions. But I did have this odd feeling, "what if I get there and it doesn't really exist?" Hardly anyone did college tours back then, and of course there was no internet, just the brochures and catalogs that colleges sent out on request. We did some college tours with our kids, but I don't think we visited the school my daughter ended up going to. (Maybe my husband took her there, I have forgotten!)

It is half way between Binghamton and Syracuse - the 2 nearest big cities. Not exactly exciting hubs.
Perhaps that is part of what he wants to 'see'?

I am so there.
It is also a lovely drive....if long. Lots of audiobook time.

Amy--if had chosen Ithaca, that's one of the 8 schools on the list my son's trumpet teacher gave him. But my son primarily cares about becoming really good at the trumpet, not a big social life. He's one of those people who prefers a smaller, quieter one (didn't get that from my family.)
They are opening more and more places. I'm a bit confused as to whether I'm eligible or not, but I answered the questions and the site said I was elig..."
Congratulations, Charlotte!
