That looks like such fun! I'm glad you two got to meet IRL.

If my son decides to try out for Juilliard, perhaps we could meet somewhere around there if I am his transportation (my son, Theresa and I--but also Sallys if she is handy!) could meet. He is a gentleman and enjoys talking with people of all ages. Not a huge reader, but has read some good books and loves classical music.

He has to do his auditions and applications next year and it's time to specialize in schools with strong orchestra programs--where the h*** has the time gone?

Amy | 12953 comments Charlotte, Congratulations! Finally!!!!

I have been refreshing all weekend and all day to get Jaden a vaccine and I am throwing in the towel, let me tell you! Can I just say, what the hell is wrong with Massachusetts?

However, my second dose is Friday morning. Happy to get that over with let me tell you.

Another breakfast fan :) ! It never ceases to amaze me how some people barely eat anything for breakfast.

For whatever reason, first thing in the morning I am never very hungry. Maybe if I never ate after dinner, that would change things! But even as a kid, I wasn't much of a breakfast eater. When I was working, I didn't like to spend the time, so I would wait till I got to work and eat while working or even a couple hours later on morning break. I was surprised how many other people did that, including some who were fixing toast or more elaborate foods for themselves.

message 58: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments Karin, there are so many pre-registered folks. Jaden is pre-registered and he heard, but that is because he is Phase Two, group 5, as a camp counselor this summer, therefore childcare worker. But I want him to get moderna or pfizer so am waiting for those sites to open, now that we have a new phase today. But nothing. The rest, not until the 19th..... Hope that helps.

I can't handle food until I have been up and moving for a couple of hours. Always been that way, even as a young child. Just my metabolism. I love breakfast all day in part because I can't face it at early hours.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12645 comments I don't love breakfast at home-I love breakfast at a great diner-LoL. I normally have yogurt or a granola bar in the morning, just so I can take my meds. I hate cooking breakdfast-

My husband and I got our invitations to register today, so are now set for next week but due to our schedules, not even on the same day. Our 20 something kids have not yet heard. My husband isn't thrilled at the drive since it's over 40 miles round trip so it will really cut into his work even though he was able to get the second earliest slot (but he often starts work at 8 am), but of course he'll get it done so he can eventually visit his mother. She's 96 and is fading--normally he's there about every second month, but hasn't been since October or November (when all were in A-1 health).

Excellent. If he applies and does a pre-audition, and if he gets a second audtion and if it's in person, we'll let you know. Of course, if he gets in with ample scholarships fully remotely, we can plan another time since of course I'll probably be the one to help him move in :)

Thankfully, for various reasons, my kids have done all, mostly or partly merit scholarships (and for one, extra financial aid). We realize that this is a privilege. But my son requires something if he is going to go directly into grad school, so we'll see what opens up. He's been really happy where he has been doing his undergraduate degree. Fabulous trumpet teachers and it's more like a family at that college than at most. This is not likely to happen again.

Karin | 9250 comments PS If we visit any other locations with PBT members, we'd love to meet as well. Right now he has 8 schools to think about applying to, at least 2 in different parts of NY, one near Anita, one in Georgia, one in the same city he is now, 2 in Texas and I don't remember the other location (if it's a third in NY or in some other state). Only schools really strong in orchestra with a good trumpet teacher, since that's his first love and main goal.

Oh, sure. No touring schools until he gets a live audition or is accepted if they are far away. He toured Juilliard when he was 15 on the way to tour the Manhattan School of Music for my middle daughter who ended up choosing visual arts. He already knows NEC very well from his time in the prep program.

By the way, I haven't been on here regularly with this 2 week reading game, but have you announced next year's college plans for your son? With my spring migraines I might have even read it and forgotten. I do remember that he's been accepted into a number of wonderful schools.

Sally, it is a date. Sometime in May. I will pm you email and mobile.

I have been craving steak frites au poivre at Rue 57 for weeks. They have outdoor dining too.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8442 comments Great news on all the vaccinations!

Youngest niece opted to stay in Texas and continue remote learning (she's a sophomore at Univ of Chicago) because ... she's eligible for the vaccine in Texas but not in Illinois. She's gotten her first shot and will have the second on May 1. She'll stay in Tx for two weeks, taking in big brother's graduation on May 8 and then head back up to CHI fully vaccinated.

Amy | 12953 comments Thanks for asking, Karin. Jaden got into four schools and waitlisted at another two, for a total of six out of ten. Got rejected from his three safeties and the obscenely high reach, so we feel really proud. He has some great choices. So we went to his favorite this past weekend, and have two more imminent visiting trips planned. Truth is that he is pretty much settled on the place we visited last weekend, but finds himself unable to pull the plug. We even bought the merch. But the poor kid can't yet commit. It feels like a very weighty decision for him. So I am not sure these trips are even happening. But hang on - its coming!

How long does he have? As I recall, May 1 is a popular date to have to make your decision known.

He did very well indeed! It's weird how colleges accept and reject students, but sometimes safety schools say no to some exceptional kids.

My kids had their decisions made easier for various reasons, but one had some disappointments (one didn't bother applying to more than one school at a time but in her transfer school she has amazing grades--better than high school, but as she has said, she is mostly taking classes easy for her now).

Amy | 12953 comments Today he tells me that perhaps he will forego the 6 hour drives (planned four out of five days straight), to do some virtual touring - lol. But he's not sure. Whatever it takes to make the decision. Yes, Its May 1st. If my husband and I can hold out for that long!

My strong recommendation based not only on personal experience but talking with college students and other parents (but of course, this is not up to me) is to visit in person because virtual tours, which my kids also did along with visiting, is not the same. Ideally if you can talk to students and not just the tour guides (the tour guides just LOVE everything! They like to please parents as well as students! Their school rules!!!!).

Teens are less likely to transfer if they have visited a campus and talked with students, although the latter is very difficult at the moment with Covid.

But of course, teens will do what they will do :)--all of mine did by that age.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8442 comments And I had never set eyes on Marquette when I chose it. My first visit was when my parents drove me here to start freshman year.

Same for me. I lived in Philadelphia and chose Carleton College in Minnesota based on info in a college guide book. I did go to a local recruiting meeting where they showed a short film of the campus and answered questions. But I did have this odd feeling, "what if I get there and it doesn't really exist?" Hardly anyone did college tours back then, and of course there was no internet, just the brochures and catalogs that colleges sent out on request. We did some college tours with our kids, but I don't think we visited the school my daughter ended up going to. (Maybe my husband took her there, I have forgotten!)

Theresa | 15664 comments Amy - one thing about Ithaca College - it's in the middle of a very rural part of NYS. It will be about academics and what is available socially on campus. Ithaca is a charming place on a lake, but it's a town not a city, the lake is glacier made so brutally cold even in August. Lots of nature and hiking in the area, even a few caves for spelunking I believe, but this is farm country. And vinyards but drinking age in NYS is 21.

It is half way between Binghamton and Syracuse - the 2 nearest big cities. Not exactly exciting hubs.

Perhaps that is part of what he wants to 'see'?

message 81: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments Oh don't you worry. He is totally not going there for a thousand reasons. What he is doing is allowing himself to choose what is inexorably evident. But if I need to drive six hours and back for him to see that - so be it. But I love your descriptions. We have a list of moms and friends 16-20 people wide in Long Island, Manhattan, Rockland County, and lower Connecticut, Queens, and NJ who love him and will be there for him in a heartbeat. You can add yourself to the list of loving aunts and we will be in the city a lot more often!

Amy--if had chosen Ithaca, that's one of the 8 schools on the list my son's trumpet teacher gave him. But my son primarily cares about becoming really good at the trumpet, not a big social life. He's one of those people who prefers a smaller, quieter one (didn't get that from my family.)
