The book is based on a true story. A group of Jewish partisans from Russia set out on a two-year journey toward Italy during the final days of WWII, with an ultimate goal of reaching Palestine. They travel through all types of weather and topography. On their journey, they engage in various activities to sabotage the Nazi's. All have suffered tremendous hardwhips as a result of the war and religious persecution. One major difference between this book and other Holocaust books is that the characters were not part of concentration camps, but partisans who fought to survive and create new lives for themselves.

Overall, a well-written book about an important time in history.
