At first I thought he was being a little bit of a jerk. But we learn that Juan asked him to stick close to her and see if she followed his edicts. It made sense that Barry would tell her that he was leading the case and she should just follow along. After he saw that she could follow the rules and was bringing up some good points, he gave her more leeway with the case.
Barry "By the Book" Crawford is very leery of Lucy and what she could get him into. He obviously knows she has had trouble in the past and he doesn't want to get caught up in any fallout. I can understand his attitude at first. As he got to know the real Lucy he came to respect her.
At first, I thought he was being a bit of a jerk, too. But once I learned Juan had asked him to be on the lookout, I had a different perspective. Overall, I think he was reasonable.
I felt like that was just how Barry worked and I think it was smart to put Lucy with him. He taught he things and helped her stay in line. She needed someone who wouldn't back down from her. Also, he learned some from her as well.
I thought Barry was a little bit of a jerk. Even after we learn that Juan told him to beware Lucy might go off course. I don't think it is necessary to pick on every question, and comment to show you are in charge. Barry does turn around a little after a time.
