I can't explain it but initially I was more suspicious of the Preece family. I thought that the bones were placed there by the Preece crew to throw suspicion on the Cowleys. As the story continued, I suspected both families. They were both shady and I couldn't find anything to redeem anyone.
I was suspicious of both but because the Preece family owned the land, I leaned more towards them.
I thought they were in cohoots with the Preece's calling the shots and the Cowley's doing their bidding. The fact that the the Cowley's paid no rent for the land was a big clue that something was up between them.
Lisa, I went back and forth on them being in cahoots together, all the way until the revelation.

Jonetta wrote: "I never, ever suspected Bart."That was the twist.. especially the grandfather thinking he was gay and belittling Bart and praising up Dale. It was well done.
I thought that the current generation of Preece's were angry that the Cowley's didn't pay rent and that was why they planted the bones on their property. It was a way to get back at them, and possibly take back the land. Bart was never on my radar. It was a great twist.
I never came up with an answer as to the apparent animosity between these two families. But, that sounds like it would have been a good one.
I agree with many of you that said you were suspicious of both families. There was just too much that neither family seemed willing to share.
Both families were acting suspiciously. I was going back and forth between them. Billy Cowley getting shot had me looking at the Preece family more. I couldn't imagine Billy's father or sister actually doing the shooting.
