Read book in late 1980s or 1990s - but it was not new. The book was about a man who visited or lived in a country where people were encouraged to live very frugally in order to save all their money for their life after they died. They believed that when they were born again into their second life they would have access to all the money they saved in the present life and therefore were willing to live like peasants in the present life so they could live much better in their next life. The undertones of the story was that the already rich and powerful were stealing money from those saving it.

I wish I could. I do remember that in families if one of the spouses spent money, the other complained that it could have been saved for the next life.

This one came up in a search and it was published in 1967: Why Call Them Back From Heaven? by Clifford D. Simak. The reviews mention that people live frugal lives in order to save money for their next life.
