Terry | 26 comments I finished Adrift on the Nile, by Naguib Mahfouz. It is an existentialist story of a group of people who no longer fit in society. They are creatives, intellectuals, artistic types, basically Humanities majors, whose skills are not wanted in a more utilitarian society. They work at jobs we would call soul-destroying, for bosses they despise, and meet at night on a houseboat to talk and smoke drugs and take comfort in each other's company. Gradually the existentialist crises deepens, and tragedy strikes. The group of characters, male and female, are well drawn individuals. A very interesting book that deserves a re-read.

Alicia M (aliciajm) | 14 comments Terry, that sounds very intriguing! And as a (semi) Humanities student, I think I'll have to track it down ;)

I finally finished Americanah last night. Took me almost a month because I took so many breaks. I really liked it though, especially the characters with all their flaws and I learned a lot. This will be hard book to review >__<

What books would you like to discuss in separate threads?
Purple Hibiscus?
Americanah?
Foreign Gods, Inc.?
others?

Nicole (ofbooksandtrees) I’m guessing this is a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I’m not all that interested in discussion threads tbh.. (not saying you shouldn't create them!)

I liked reading(and sharing) opinions on what everyone was/is reading in this thread, but discussions about all the little details/meanings just aren't really for me..

Nicole (ofbooksandtrees) Almost halfway into purple hibiscus and I really like it so for!
I was slightly worried after being disapointed with foreign gods, inc. that i wouldn't like this one either, but so far it's much better!

Lars (herodotvonhalikarnassos) | 9 comments A discussion would only make sense if there are several people who have read the book, so Purple Hibiscus and Foreign Gods,Inc. would be logical choices, but I'm open to other suggestions as well.

Alicia M (aliciajm) | 14 comments I think a few other people have read Baba Segi too, I think that could be an interesting one :) and I'm also in the middle of purple hibiscus and it's going pretty well!

Alicia M (aliciajm) | 14 comments Hey guys! I've finally managed to upload my book review of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives onto my blog, Secrets of the Student Life. You can find the post here:

*WARNING* The post DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS but if you want a spoiler-free version, just follow the link to my Goodreads review (in the blog post, near the top). I enjoyed Baba Segi more than I thought I would, and I'm very glad that I decided to read it. I recommend it to any of you who haven't yet read it, or who want another Adrican bol to read!

Alicia M (aliciajm) | 14 comments *African book - I don't know what went wrong there! My phone tends to be a little...temperamental when it comes to spelling! ;)

That's too bad. I was looking forward to learning more about this 'Adrican bol'. ;)

Terry | 26 comments I also read A Man of the People, by Chinua Achebe. It's a very interesting novel about the corruption of ideals and the addiction to power.

Nicole (ofbooksandtrees) Really loved Purple Hibiscus!
the ending wasn't what I had hoped for though, but the rest of it was perfection.

also in case anyone is interested I 'reviewed' both foreign gods inc & purple hibiscus.
