Stacey | 3 comments I was struck by how much I enjoyed reading this book despite the very upsetting content. Somehow the author managed to weave in enough hope (without being overly cheesy) that the devastation didn't overwhelm me and I really looked forward to picking it up.

I completely agree.

Laurie | 652 comments I just finished this book and I completely agree that it is enjoyable despite the sad and violent content. The author did a tremendous job of depicting violence, fear, hunger, and hopelessness of the villagers and refugees in various stages of the civil war. But even though their situations were bleak and the losses of human life were so enormous, it was not overdone and did not feel overwhelming to read about. I was sad and emotional at times but there was hope and positive events sprinkled throughout which made the bad parts bearable. I would like to read a sequel to know how Juba's and Thiko's lives came out.
