Hi,
The book I'm thinking of took place in a future, science-fiction version of Earth where some calamity has happened such that many parts of the planet are dissolving into a strange state of unreality. The main character in the book works for a company that is engaged (if I remember right) by a corporation that more or less controls the planet to go around reining in this destructive process in especially critical places.

There's a major plot twist whereby (view spoiler)[the main character is revealed to actually be nothing more than a figment of another character's imagination or something along those lines. (hide spoiler)]
