Jennifer (atomicleda) | 11 comments I’ve seen this happening a lot lately with Stephen King’s books. This is the main edition showing in a search and the description is not in English.

Shouldn’t the original edition be the one that comes up in a search?

The edition that comes up in search is the edition with the most ratings/adds. That edition meets this criteria.

But since I’m on an English website, how do we read the information? And since it’s the only edition that comes up when we search, it’s going to be the one rated and added.

Renske | 12228 comments Easiest way to find a specific edition is to search for the ISBN/ASIN. Also, on the website you can go to the 'other editions' part and look there for your edition.

Jennifer (atomicleda) | 11 comments I mean, if I’m looking casually for more books by an author and a bunch of them aren’t showing in English.

And there’s something odd about this particular book showing barely any reviews or lists in the many English versions published over the years, but so many on a more recent foreign translation. That has never happened with any of his other books. The discrepancy is way too big to be correct. In fact, none of his books have ever shown that few. It’s as if one of his original editions was changed.

Renske | 12228 comments Not everyone pays attention to which edition they added to their shelves. In this case, the Spanish title is the same as the English, which means a certain amount of people will just shelves this edition based on the title without noticing it is the Spanish edition. That helps the Spanish edition staying the most popular edition.

Jennifer (atomicleda) | 11 comments Except that this edition wasn’t published until years later, making it appear as if barely anyone read this book prior to that date. That sure doesn’t match up with the popularity of this author or the sales of that book. A few weeks back, I found another book that showed in Russian. When I examined it closer, the book had been edited at some point. It shows corrected now.

Jennifer (atomicleda) | 11 comments Ok, this is still bothering me, so I looked at the Librarian change log on this edition of the book. This edition wasn’t published until June of 2018, yet it has librarian edits going back to 10 years prior to it even being published.

There are several edits on this edition to change the isbn. So somewhere in these many changes, they took the most popular edition of this book and changed it to a different edition, published 10 years after this edition was first edited. I would love to see this fixed, but is there a way to find out which edition this was prior to the repeated changes to its isbn? They had to have taken one of the original editions and edited it to this edition, which is why they had to add the translator and change all the descriptions to Spanish. It was originally one of the editions published prior to 2008.

This is one of the earliest edits to the isbn of this edition and this is the book info that goes with it:

Insomnia
ISBN-13: 9780340632680
ISBN-10: 0340632682
Author: King, Stephen
Edition: 1st Edition
Binding: Hardcover
Publisher: Viking
Published: January 1994

Other editions were merged into this one (because it is the most popular edition of the work). Those editions' edits prior to being merged will appear to be edits to the current edition. This is a limitation of the way the log works.

Merges cannot be undone.

Closing thread.
