Robert (ricroscupshigh) | 542 comments A fantasy book read probably early nineties. The main character had been a dancer and somehow was recruited to have some sort of law enforcement role (maybe following injury?). There was a scene with him working out with a dance routine in a fighting class? I think it was part of a set of books set on the same fantasy world (composed of islands) but not necessarily linked by plot or recurring characters and that there were people who were shapeshifters or animal hybrids of some description (cats come to mind).

You're welcome.

Robert (ricroscupshigh) | 542 comments Getting somewhere: Kristine Kathryn Rusch wrote a series called The fey, which seems to match the world-building elements I recalled, although so far I've not been able to find a specific book matching the plot details I remember.

It's always possible, of course, that I'm conflating the world of this series with the plot of something else!

Traitors by Kristine Kathryn Rusch? "Emilio Diate—the greatest dancer the Kingdom has ever produced—has vowed vengeance on the government for its merciless execution of his entire family. Now forced to start over on the merchant island of Golga, where his dancing is forbidden, the handsome refugee joins the secret police with only one dark intention—to find his family’s killers and serve his own brand of justice."
