Dracula. :) Seriously, that's about as basic as it gets when it comes to vampire fiction. It's really a mystery novel as well as a horror story; it's told from multiple points of view (diary and journal entries, newspaper clippings, etc.), and it eventually weaves the different threads together to reveal the awful truth. I don't think it's that difficult to read--if you can handle Stephenie Meyer's word salad, you can handle Bram Stoker.

When you're done with Dracula, move on to Interview With the Vampire. Still a classic after all these years, and it was Anne Rice's portrayal of the vampire as a sympathetic figure that eventually led to the Edward Cullen-type of vampire-as-romantic-hero.

They Thirst by Robert McCammon. Written in the 80's, but scary. A very different look on vampires - hint, they don't glitter and are not seductive, thoughtful, etc.!

There is a great series by Kim Harrison (Rachel Morgan). The first book is called "Dead Witch Walking" she is a witch her roomates are a vampire and a pixie. Tha "Vampire Diaries" by J.L Smith (better than the tv series) let me know if you need more recommendations i own over 500 books. if you ever need other than supernatural.

Night World and Dark Visions by LJ Smith. Vampire Diaries is good, too. Umm, Richelle Mead is also coming out with a spin-ff to Vampire Academy called Bloodlines. It's not out yet, but I'm sure it'll be pretty good. :] I really liked Vampire Empire by Clay & Susan Griffith. I haven't read this yet, but I hear Night Huntress is pretty amazing.

I would recommend "Let the Right One In" by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It's a really interesting and original addition to the vampire genre. Granted, it's vastly different from "Twilight" and "Vampire Academy" it's absolutely worth the read if you've gotten sick of the same old story of girl-meets-ridiculously-sexy-vampire-boy.

I also agree with "Interview with the Vampire" but if you're a little more adventurous I would suggest "Blood and Gold" by the same author because Anne Rice is THE queen of the genre and it's hard to go wrong with the Vampire Chronicles.

Of course you can't forget "Dracula" because that's pretty much where it all began.

Dracula and Anne Rice novels tend to be a little too over complicated and long, drawn-out and quite frankly boring; however many of the other books suggested here are really what nour is looking for. I have read all of the original vampire diaries, i have read the first 6 books in the vampire academy, as well as many others including The Last Vampire by C. Pike.

I am also slow with reading and dont like a book that cant capture my attention with in the first page. I highly recommend reading the LJ Smith books or the Christopher Pike books, if your looking for something that will grab you and pull you in without much effort on your part in the first 5 pages.

Immortals after Dark by Kresly Cole, and some of the ones I mentioned up above. I recommend to anyone who can afford audio books to get The Black Dagger Brotherhood on audio. It's a great experience, to hear. And get ready for lots of blushin, and fannin urself. And I won't mention what else.
