Karin | 9218 comments A British crime/mystery novelist who is in Istanbul learns of the death of a notorious and mysterious criminal, Dimitrios. He asks to see the body in the morgue and then sets out to learn what he can of this mysterious criminal who has met his just desserts. As he travels around various areas, things are not quite as simple or as safe as he originally thought it might be. The main plot twist came as no surprise, but that doesn't mean that this book was entirely predictable, because it wasn't. That said, this type of novel is no longer my cup of tea; I read it for a group discussion and at this point plan to read no more of these even though the writing is quite good--it didn't win accolades for nothing.

Theresa | 15524 comments I remember being disappointed with this when I read it many years ago. I think it felt flat to me. I expected something more of a thriller than it was.

I read it for a classics mystery read, but it's also called a spy novel, even though the protagonist isn't a spy, nor is the other character he thinks is a spy. There are no spies in this book, actually.

In any event, I don't plan to read more by this author.
