I used to,when I was a kid.And it had a bad effect,it weakened my eyesight and made me feel lazy and lethargic. But then,I made it a point never to read in bed.

I do read in bed and enjoy Sanderson and Tolkien. I'm almost done with one by Ruth Ware and will be reading one by Robert Galbraith (AKA J.K. Rowling) next. Reading helps me relax: I'm never without a book to read. Will look for The Well of Ascension. Thanks, Graeme.

So is the concern about reading in bed due to poor light or just the overall feeling of malaise? I understand the strain on the eyes thing, perhaps that's why I used to only read right before bed anyway. It gave my eyes that tired feeling. But since I've switched to reading e-books I don't have the same issue with lamp light.
Both things.I recently read an article that because of all the work from home trend these days,a lot of people even work in bed, with their laptops. That takes its toll on health.
I have started reading in bed. The books I read at night are mostly self-help, motivational, and inspirational books.

Yes. I find the right book relaxing. Can't read stuff like Sanderson or Sawyer because too hard to stop reading.
I used to read in bed a lot. As a kid, sneaking books to read was a given. Our mother used to limit our reading and wanted to inspect the books to make sure they didn't impinge on her religious and moral beliefs. She was a very slow reader. So we would give her a book we had already read that met her criteria and get 5 more from our school library and sneak them under the covers with flashlights (sci-fi; suspense, supernatural, magic - the forbidden).Living alone, I tend to turn the TV on because I can fall asleep to it. It's much harder to put down a book, for me. (I do most of my ebook reading in the bathtub - so glad they are waterproof now.)
W wrote: "Haven't tried the bathtub for reading so far,Lizzie."I recommend a waterproof ereader. My 1st paperwhite died after a bath. The 2nd one died, but came back to life. The 3rd one I used all the extra ones I could get under my extra warranty that I bought, cause I finally got smarter. The last one of those is still working.
Yes, I love to read in bed because it's comfy and cozy, and it helps me to fall asleep. Sometimes, though, I get too caught up in what I'm reading and am up all night.

I do read in bed on occasion. Usually I have woken up and cannot get back to sleep. I read then if the wife is in the other room.
I love reading in bed, I find it a great way to wind down and calm the mind before sleep. Now, of course, some books makes it harder to sleep because you just want to keep reading, but usually I have the powers to resist that.
Interesting thread.... :)I read in bed all the time and always have read in bed. Since having a kindle fire I even read more because with the kindles you can adjust the backlight and the font. So I change my backlight to black and the font is white, then I can adjust it one step further to making it dim so the font is not bright. The only bad thing about reading in bed is when you are in the middle of a great book then you pull an all night bender! lol :)
