Hello everyone! Friendly group it looks like. I'm new, but love historical mysteries. Recently read A Singular and Whimsical Problem and really enjoyed it, perfect for the Christmas weekend. I guess it's a kickoff for a new series, which looks really promising. I have Brooklyn on Fire on the way and look forward to it. I enjoy all periods, but seem to be particularly drawn to the dawn of the 20th Century.

I'm a museum curator by day and an aspiring writer at night (and any other spare moment I can squeeze in). We live in Omaha, my partner Susan is also a writer (journalist and fiction), and we had our first baby in July. So, now that he's going to bed at a decent hour regularly and sleeping well, we're finally getting back to our projects and reading.

Endeavour Press are pleased to be launching the first ever virtual historical fiction festival. It will run from 18-22 April, and so far we have fifty authors signed up, including William Ryan, Antonia Hodgson, Michael Arnold, Sarah Gristwood, Hallie Rubenhold and Manda Scott.

I realized I posted in a couple of threads without introducing myself, so wanted to apologize and catch up! : )

Although I enjoy a good historical mystery, I haven't been reading many lately so was mainly lurking. Some of my favorites are Paul Doherty's Brother Athelstan, the Matthew Shardlake series and Nicola Upson's Josephine Tey books. Always looking for new discoveries, though...

Welcome Miss M! I enjoyed the shardlake books as well, though I really didn't like Doherty. I don't like how he puts in pointless scenes that stall the story, just to show off a bit more of his research (long walks through the city in the athelsten books for instance).

Have you tried the Matthew Bartholemew series by Susanna Gregory? That'd have to be my favourite I think.

Ha! I do know what you mean about Doherty, he can be repetitive...he also always has a set piece about London Bridge...but sometimes I just fall in love with a series as a whole and forgive the author their faults. Not always though! I'm also probably a bit strange in that I love a good info dump. :D

I've read a few of the Gregory books and probably will try again, and I do like the character of Bartholomew, but I think her books are awfully drawn out and could use some shortening. Re Shardlake, I also like the Rory Clements books in the later Tudor era.

Hello! I'm excited to find this group and anticipate discovering great books through these posts. I travel for work and spend my airport time reading, so I go through a lot of books. My favorite book this year is Jane Steele, by Lindsay Faye, which is more aptly described as historical crime rather than historical mystery, since she confesses right at the start. It's a take off of Jane Eyre. This author also has a series set in New York when the police force was just established, The Gods of Gotham is book 1, which I also recommend. I also like the St Cyr mysteries others have mentioned, and the Kronberg crime series, which is written by Annelie Wendeberg.
