Gretchen (eab2012) | 255 comments I've been reading a lot of historical mysteries lately and I stumbled across this group. It must be fate. My favorite historical mystery series (so far) features Gordianus the Finder in the Roma Sub Roma novels by Steven Saylor. C.J. Sansom's Shardlake novels are a close second, followed by Susan Elia MacNeal's Maggie Hope series.
I am currently reading Priscilla Royal's Medieval mysteries and Nancy Bilyeau's Joanna Stafford novels.

Susan I am quite interested in this group as I love historical mysteries. My question is how you select the monthly reads.

message 165: by Pam (new)

Pam Tedder | 7 comments Hi everyone, I have always read historical novels - I started with Jean Plaidy - and love mystery novels so it was only natural that I should read historical mysteries.

I loved everything written by Ellis Peters/Edith Pargetter and have enjoyed C J Sansom, Linsey Davis, Susanna Gregory and Bernard Knight (Though I find the Medieval Murderers books, which are co-written by a group of authors, very difficult to get into) I have 'read' a lot of Anne Perry (I have to listen to her books on tape because I find her use of the vernacular in her writing too distracting) M C Beaton and Parris (but am getting fed up with Bruno's whining now) my looking back on this I seem very negative and I am not in the least really.

I love to read and will read just about anything except horror because I just don't need the nightmares. At the moment I am working my way through The Templar Knight series by Maureen Ash - not a patch on Ellis Peters but good for light relief and she does not get her historical detail wrong - which is a killer for me.

Pam Tedder | 7 comments Sorry forgot to mention Edward Marston who has written some brilliant books - from the Railway detective to an Elizabethen detecting actor with a Restoration problem solving architect inbetween.

message 167: by S.K. (new)

S.K. Rizzolo (skrizzolo) | 49 comments I started with Jean Plaidy too! Also, I have read and enjoyed many of the authors you mention.

Edward Marston, however, is an author I've been meaning to try for a long while. I heard him speak at a conference once, and he gave a fascinating presentation about his research process. I believe he was an actor before he became a writer.

message 168: by Kayne (new)

Kayne Milhomme | 1 comments Hi all,

Glad to be a part of the thread. The Mary Russell series is my favorite, with the original Sherlock Holmes stories a solid second. And of course there are Agatha Christie's works. That said, I run the gamut with what I enjoy, and am looking forward to suggestions!

I've never read Marston, though he is on my TBR list. I've enjoyed the Jim Stringer series by Andrew Martin - railroad mysteries just before, and then during, WWI. I'm hoping for more - he seems to have stopped.

Like Doherty he is prolific:)

Hello! I enjoy historical mysteries. I like the Lady Darby series. I've started the Marcus Didious Falco series, the Mary Russell series and I hope to start the C.S. Harris series this month.

message 174: by Shomeret (last edited Jul 22, 2015 09:12AM) (new)

Shomeret | 147 comments Welcome, Christina. I may also be reading my first C.S. Harris relatively soon if I have the time. I can always fit in a Phryne Fisher because they're so slim. C.S. Harris writes average length books, but I have so many on my library TBR and have to return most to the library unread.

Frances McNamara (fdmcnama) | 9 comments Christina, Those are some of my favorites, so you might want to also try Steven Saylor's Gordianus the Finder novels.

Dana (danabasket) Hi! I'm Dana and my favorite genres are historical mystery and historical fiction.

My favorite authors are;

Anna Lee Huber (just discovered the Lady Darby Mysteries and love them)
Charles Todd (Was able to meet them at a local library)

I have downloaded "A Curious Beginning" by Deanna Raybourn, can't wait to start reading this one. I'm currently reading "A Grave Matter" by Anna Lee Huber and will be starting her next book after I'm done.

I am looking forward to chatting with everyone.

I'm new to the group, but I love reading and writing historical mysteries. I'm rereading THE DANTE CLUB at the moment, and I'm going to read Nicola Upson's latest, THE DEATH OF LUCY KYTE next. I really love anything to do with 19th century New York so naturally I love THE ALIENIST.
