If you are looking for a book to make you smile, then this is it. Ruth Jones’ storytelling, characterisation and easy humour are a joy to read.

The book follows Catrin, Lana and Judith through 40 plus years, showing how each one develops into adulthood, and the trials and joys they experience along the way. Three very different women who find lifelong friendship, despite ups and downs that friendships inevitably bring. A warm hearted hug in a book, reminding us that true friendship can withstand arguments, separation and differences.

Ruth Jones has such a beautifully perceptive insight into human feelings and emotions, but more than that she has such a sensitive and understanding way of expressing this on the page. There is a lyrical feel to her writing. Free flowing and expressive, without being flowery or verbose.

We see how their families, environments and life choices affect them and those around them. Around this close knit group, you have some memorable characters, Sol, and Gareth, the long suffering partner’s, Fr.O’Leary and the very Catholic Kellys, the long suffering George and the troublesome Patricia Harris and a myriad of other people passing through. All well drawn and integral to the women’s stories.

The dialogue is to the point, well timed and witty, with each character having their own distinct voice. I defy you not to read this book with a Welsh accent.

A book about a childhood promise made over a Curly Wurly wrapper. Touching, funny, and a timely reminder that friendship can survive, even when there is distance in between.
