Ooooof to this rating.

Let me give you a bit of a background on my feelings for this series. I found red Queen ok. Wasn’t the best, but I’ve read worse, so I thought of continuing. Then I read glass sword, which I hated completely. But I read on, as I heard it gets better. And it did get better. I loved book 3, kings cage. Not enough to give a 4 or 5 star, but enough to make me very, very excited for War Storm as I thought I’d finally like this series and join the fangirling.

I thought War Storm would be amazing. I thought it would be a great mix of politics, betrays, backstabbing and romance. I thought it would be an incredible end to this series and blow me away.

If only my good luck lasted.

But now since I read it, I have two choices: to let it slide or to write a rant. I choose to rant.

This book was a disappointment. It was a drag, nearly 700 pages and yet it made me feel nothing. Absolutely nothing except anger and fury and rage and disappointment and regret at wasted potential.

And now my friends, welcome to my huge rant on why I hated War Storm by Victoria Aveyard. Let’s break this book down.

The plot

The Red Queen series should have been a trilogy. Making it a four book series wasn't a good idea.

Why? I'll tell you why.

This series doesn't have enough content for 4 books. To give you a summary: In book 1, we see that the Red's are rebelling as they no longer want to serve the Silver's. Then in book 2, we see that there are more Newbloods like Mare. In book 3, we see the different houses come together and join the Scarlet Guard, only for them to betray The Scarlet Guard in the end.

So the conflict of book 4... is what? It's supposed to be everyone uniting in the end? How interesting! 👀

The plot of this book is non-existent, despite it being around 700 pages.

It was predictable and boring. It felt like random incidents were put together to have something going on. Here's a spoiler filled summary: (in tags)

(view spoiler)[We have these people come to Montfort, and then there's a random attack there. After that Iris comes and takes the children of a kingdom that the Montfort people had kidnaped (don't remember the name), and frees them from prison. Then we have some random war scenes here and there, we have Maven get betrayed, and a final battle which was a complete mess so it deserves another section. (hide spoiler)]

There. I told you the plot of an almost 700 page book in 5 lines. I know I did a bad job, don't call me out.

Everything about this could have been cut down and nothing much would have changed. A lot of people say this book was filled with politics and betrayal, but unfortunately it wasn't for me. If you want a good book with political intrigue, I'd recommend The Cruel Prince series.

I really wish the plot was more thought out and wasn't so much of a filler.


The writing

I have no idea how to put this, but I just find Victoria Aveyard's writing a bit dull.

There was so much repetition of phrases and sentences like- 'sneer', 'flinch', 'smirk etc'. and in general the way the characters deal with things was very recurring.

This is a personal preference thing, so I guess to each to their own, but the writing made everything seem more boring than it already was.

The characters

We're doing this in points-

1. The biggest problem with this series in general, is the fact that all the characters are carbon copies of each other with hardly any personality differences, so it failed completely in unique character voices.

I can give you a list of things you’ll find in all these characters-
~ All of them have killed/ battled in war and are good at fighting
~ All of them are stubborn
~ All of them make rash, impulse decisions
~ All of them are somehow important to this war/ hold some powerful position
~ All of them are physically strong
~ All of them, at some point, are insecure regarding something
~ All of them has lost someone important to them
~ All of them are selfish
~ All of them are cunning and have betrayed in some way

WHERE IS THE DIFFERENCE?

Mare=Iris=Cal=Evangeline=Cameron=Farley=Maven

There is no difference between these characters.

This book is told from 5 perspectives: Mare, Evangeline, Iris, Cal and Maven. Usually, when a book has more than three perspectives in 1st person, I feel it isn’t done well as there isn’t much of a distinct character voice.

Books are a great way at seeing another perspective, so I always love reading as I get to see the other side of the world. But when there’s nothing different with the characters that do exist here, I felt like I was seeing everything from the same side. And that makes it boring.

So now I’ll come to my point; all these characters are so similar that it didn’t matter to me who’s head I was in, I was hearing a similar thought formation each time.

I can only say that this made me very sad, as I had hoped to love these characters, but instead, because of this book, I lost most of the love I had for the only reason I finished this series- Maven and Farley.

And thus I don’t like anything about this series anymore. Which is bad. :(

2. There is no character development.

Fine, all these characters are similar. BUT they should develop right?

WRONG.

They all stay the same. The person who they were in book 1 and who they were at the end of book 4 had hardly any development. Mare is still Mare, Cal is still Cal and Cameron suddenly becomes irrelevant.

Farley has a teeny bit development, but that’s all and Maven’s character was ruined. And I don’t have an opinion on Iris, she’s just there.

And well what was the point? After 4 books, if the characters are still the same people then why have 4 books in the first place?

Yes actually that was a bit rude but I don’t regret that one as I was furious with the book and I had lots and lots of quotes for each point. In fact, I didn’t include several quote as I ran out of space. There are more quotes for everything I said in my status update. In short, that book was not it.
