Distinguish between books with same title?

Is there an accepted way to clearly distinguish between different books with the same title and author?

The main example I'm thinking of is the Episcopal Church's Book of Common Prayer. Historical versions are typically referred to by their year of authorization (e.g. the current 1979 book vs. the previous 1928 book), but the years have never been part of the official printed title.

1928: The Book of Common Prayer

There's probably a separate question about whether they should be separate works or just editions of the same work, but either way the users should be able to tell which they're adding to their shelves.

Each record should have a publication date, at least.

1979 was a big change from 1928 (and still controversial for some). I think previous revisions were less drastic.

I don't think publication date works, because new editions of old versions have continued to be published.
