message 1: by SarahKat, Buddy Reads (new)

SarahKat | 6443 comments This thread is to discuss The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Pages: 200 pages

Length: 1 Month (March)

Participants: Ilse, Desire, Frezita.

Everyone reads at their own pace during a Buddy Read. Because participants can be at different parts of the book at different times, it is extremely important to mark spoilers so that the book is not ruined for someone who is not as far along as others!!!

Mark spoilers by placing {spoiler} before the text and {/spoiler} after the text but use the < and > instead of the { and }.

Ilse | 337 comments I want to read a few other books first, so I think I'll start reading this book later this month.

message 5: by Frezita (new)

Frezita | 65 comments I'm finishing up a couple books for February but I have my copy and will start sometime next week. I've only seen the movie so I'm eager to read the book and start comparing it to the movie.

I’m with you, only saw the movie. I’m going to watch it again once I’m done with the book.

Sinisa | 385 comments This is one of my all time favorite books and couldn't help but checking this buddy read. There are actually a lot of movies done by this book dating to silent films era. I think there is 5 movies with one considered lost copy so 4 possible to watch. Two I watched and liked are DiCaprio version from 2013 and Robert Redford from 1974.

I’ll have to try and find the 1974 version! I just finished this, will write my thoughts here soon. Plan to watch both movies this month now as well.

Desiré (desiremorebooks) | 589 comments So I don’t really feel like writing a review for this one, but what about a discussion? After I watched the Leo movie when it came out and then reading the book this month I had the same thoughts, (view spoiler) . Well then I read this review below and am rethinking my whole view, and dang it I think she has a point. It’s a long review but worth it.

Sinisa | 385 comments That was a fun review made me laugh. There are some great points in there. I saw to many theories picking apart meanings in this book. I don't think it is that complicated especially who wrote it. Would Fitzgerald buried a heroine so deep that most of people missed it? For me this is a book with characters that suck and they all do to some extent but book works. You care about them while you read and then at some point you turn on them (you have to they are all terrible, including Gatsby). The last theory about what happened to Gatsby sound tempting to me, wish someone take that as an idea for film instead of making another remake few years from now.

Ilse | 337 comments That review is indeed quite long, but also unexpectedly interesting. She does have a point, Daisy might actually be the hero of the story. I agree with Sinisa, if they make the story into a movie again (I think there are two already), then it should definitely be made with Daisy as the hero instead of the villain.
