knight and squire

A plague has past through Novel Kingdom, on the edge of Lake Lexicon. The heroes who were previously keeping the kingdom safe from monsters have been particularly badly hit and Queen Skye has put out a call for new heroes to come and maintain the safety of the kingdom.

In recognition of the fact that the kingdom is in a perilous state with all the new monsters, she is planning to pair experienced adventurers with the newcomers to help them find their way around the kingdom while they settle in.

How to take part
Post below saying whether you are a newcomer to the kingdom or an experienced hero. We will pair you up to complete the tasks together. Both of you will receive the same rewards from completions.

Tasks
1. Say hello in the buddy thread set up for you
2. Introduce yourself in the Tavern (the experienced player does not need to do this again!)
3. Newcomer reaches level 2 experience
4. Newcomer levels up a weapon
5. Newcomer levels up both weapons
6. Newcomer defeats their first monster
7. Together spell out one of NOVEL, ROLE, PLAY, GAME using standard spell out rules
8. Visit the melting pot and suggest a quest idea that you have worked on together
9. The experienced player gives a gift to the newcomer to help with a quest (e.g. potion/egg/magic item)
10. Both partners read a book that involves a teacher or student, or that has a link to a video game (i.e. Ready Player One or The Last Wish). It does not have to be the same book. The mentor can also read a book with the letters AS in the title.

Rewards
These are additive (i.e when you complete hard, in total you will have 23 XP, 10 gold and a major heal potion).

Tutorial: Complete 2 tasks for 2XP
Easy: Complete 4 tasks for 4XP
Intermediate: Complete 7 tasks for 7XP and 10 gold
Hard: Complete 10 tasks for 10 XP and a major heal potion

I actually have several of the tasks completed (WOOT), but of course any advice you have will be much appreciated.

Completed Tasks:

and for #10, I will read Ready Player One, because I can use it for my The Academy - part II quest as well.

Here is my quest log showing what I have so far.

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 372 comments Hello Lyssa!

Wow, it looks like you have a massive headstart. Thanks for making my job easy!

Ok, it looks like you've already finished Tasks 1 - 6! Which means we each get 6 XP already for completing easy level!

I'm going to give you a Heal Potion for task 9, which you can use to heal yourself 10 HP anytime, including in the middle of a battle. However, I can hold off if you want to be extra strategic and wait to level up (since it refills your HP to full, so if you want to attack something that won't quite kill you but make you really hurt). But I think you only have 3 HP, so it might be best to just level up now to be fully healed for your battles next week. But let you know your preference.

I can actually shift and use one of the books I'm reading now for task 10, so that easy.

Which only leaves tasks 7 and 8. For #8 let me have a think about quest ideas and you can do the same. For number 7, I have books in my tote currently for P and A if we want to do PLAY.

Lyssa (odessanightshade) | 31 comments Awesome!

Thank you for the potion! I'm going to use it now along with a level up for tasks completed here (7 tasks= 13XP).
(view spoiler)

I also picked out two books to cover L and Y in PLAY, so that works for me.

For #8, I put this together. Let me know what you think and if you'd like to tweak.
After a long day of questing, you are looking forward to relaxing with friends and a pint at The Local Tavern. But when you arrive, your fellow hero is more quiet and introspective than usual. He tells the tale of an old archivist he met deep in the woods. You travel to the shack to find Confucius. He imparts this single bit of advice: "Study the past if you would define the future.”

Earn +1XP (max +5) for each re-read (must be over a year since last read)

Lyssa (odessanightshade) | 31 comments I've finished my book for #10. They didn't have Ready Player One, so I read The Nickel Boys instead.

Lyssa (odessanightshade) | 31 comments I've updated my quest idea as well. Let me know what you think :)

Quotable Quests Part 1
You have been doing great! You've been questing, slaying monsters, and helping out all the residents of Novel Kingdom. But now... you're in a rut. What to do next? You need to advance your skills to continue your adventures. You hear tell of an old archivist deep in the woods that has sage advice for blossoming heroes. You travel to the shack to find Voltaire. Without preamble he asks: "Is there anyone so wise as to learn by the experience of others?”

1. Choose a friend or fellow adventurer.
2. Visit their profile and use the 'compare books' feature. (found by clicking 'more' next to the friend or add friend button)
3. Change your shelf to 'to-read' and their shelf to 'read'.
4. Read 1-5 books you have in common. (you can use one profile or multiple)

Reward: +1XP each book read (max +5)

Quotable Quests Part 2
Quotable Quests Part 1 must be complete
You have taken Voltaire's advice and are eager to get back to the woods to share everything you have learned. But before you can pass on the story of your adventures, you notice another man in the room. Confucius looks up at you and says: "Study the past if you would define the future.”

1. Reread a book (must be one year since last read)
2. Read a book set in the past
3. Read a book set in the future
4. Read a book with dual time frames
5. Read a book involving time travel

Reward: +1XP each prompt

Quotable Quests Part 3
Quotable Quests Part 2 must be complete
You head back into the woods yet again. You have taken upon you the knowledge of friends, studied the past, and ruminated on the prospects of the future. Surely you're ready to impress the brilliant philosophers with these great achievements. You approach the clearing where you will find the shack, but... where is it? Everything is gone- the shack, the little garden out front, and Voltaire is no where to be found. The only thing that remains is a slab with a table resting at it's center. You approach the table to find this note: “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” ― Aristotle

1. Read a book by one of your favorite authors.
2. Read a book in your favorite genre.
3. Read a book whose cover is a favorite color.
4. Read a book involving a favorite hobby, sport, game, or past time.
5. Read a book that inspires introspection

Reward: +1XP each prompt

Megs (meganlikesbooks) | 372 comments Wow, it's so good! I love it. The only suggestion that I have is maybe we can add a bonus if someone completed all 15 books/prompts. Maybe just some extra XP? What do you think?

I feel bad because you did so much work. Do you want me to take another one of the spell-it-out letters? I have a book on hold right now that would work for Y. But if you already have a book picked or started, let me know.

You are killing it! A Drop Bear already!?! Great job!

Also, let me know if you have any questions or want any suggestions or anything like that.

Lyssa (odessanightshade) | 31 comments Don't sweat it! I'm actually recently home/out of work due to the disruptive school schedule from covid. So I was happy for something to do while I adjust. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll add a bonus and post to the forum.

I have finished You Should Have Left and Messenger by Lois Lowry for the spell-it-out. I'll let you know if I have any other questions.
