Hailee | 2762 comments Hi welcome to the group! There are some great series on this list.

We are actually starting a series buddy read of the Temeraire series starting with book 1 on the 22nd March. Reading one book per month from then on if you want to jump in on that from book 2.

The Commonwealth Saga is actually on my 2021 to read list. Can't wait to start it.

If there are any books you want to buddy read that aren't already organised always feel free to ask on the buddy read invite thread which can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Tawallah | 65 comments Okay - message 3 will not be happening. So I will need to revise my plans. Instead of continuing series I am picking up new ones.
Will need to rethink my strategy. But I am enjoying what I have picked up.

So far in May :
Finished The Shadow of What Was Lost (The Licanius Trilogy, #1) by James Islington - really enjoyed it but will need to listen to this again and then continue.
Stalled on Empire in Black and Gold (Shadows of the Apt, #1) by Adrian Tchaikovsky - not keeping my attention but it isn't bad. Not sure what is happening here.
Read: The Citadel of Weeping Pearls by Aliette de Bodard - this was okay but enjoyed The Tea Master and the Detective (The Universe of Xuya) by Aliette de Bodard much more.

Reading in progress- Three Parts Dead (Craft Sequence, #1) by Max Gladstone - imaginative but not quite my cup of tea
Golden Son (Red Rising Saga, #2) by Pierce Brown - I remember nothing
A Memory Called Empire (Teixcalaan #1) by Arkady Martine - still shines for me.

I hear that... I get all gung-ho for clearing my Unfinished Series TBR, then I get Burnt, and shift to opening a dozen more long-winded series...

I remember reading and liking A Memory Called Empire... but not the details, beyong maybe a similarity to The Traitor Baru Cormorant... which would be fine, except I want/need to read A Desolation Called Peace, but don't really want to do a restart on the series/trilogy...

EDIT: After reading the summary on wikipedia and a spoilery ending summary on reddit, I might have to do a re-read... I have vague memories now... but most especially, the naming conventions remind me of Ninefox Gambit and other plot elements remind me of Ancillary Justice

Yes Timelord, I started to read A Memory Called Empire - but got distracted by a readathon on Discord.

But, it was so good on re-listening. Planning to pick up in August or September and its sequel.

Tawallah | 65 comments Having finished my re-read of the Red Rising since I remember little - now hoping to pick up Iron Gold.

Made progress with Riyria Revelations - read these 2 in June Theft of Swords (The Riyria Revelations, #1-2) by Michael J. Sullivan and Rise of Empire (The Riyria Revelations, #3-4) by Michael J. Sullivan . And I am eager to complete Heir of Novron (The Riyria Revelations, #5-6) by Michael J. Sullivan .

Finished the duology of Dread Nation with Deathless Divide (Dread Nation, #2) by Justina Ireland - good but not as charming as its predecessor.

Tawallah | 65 comments July = Indie reads

So in terms of indie books here is what I have read/planning to read:

Mortal techniques: Never Die by Rob J. Hayes 3.5 stars, best suited for fans of anime.
Currently reading : Ustilan Tales: Spit and Song (Ustlian Tales #2) by Travis M. Riddle
Next up is the Standalone beloved by all: The Sword of Kaigen by M.L. Wang

message 12: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 65 comments Non- indie reads
Planned: Heir of Novron (The Riyria Revelations, #5-6) by Michael J. Sullivan European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman (The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club, #2) by Theodora Goss The Gilded Ones (The Gilded Ones, #1) by Namina Forna Arcadia by Iain Pears Holy Sister (Book of the Ancestor, #3) by Mark Lawrence

message 13: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 65 comments July Wrap up
I read two books in the Mortal Techniques and liked the first book more. So currently up to date with that series: Never Die by Rob J. Hayes Pawn's Gambit by Rob J. Hayes

Also caught up on the Ustilian Tales: Spit and Song (Ustlian Tales #2) by Travis M. Riddle - not my favorite book but appreciated what the author did in this one especially with addiction

Loved to bits : Arcadia by Iain Pears - just realised this is not a series.

Started a new series and eagerly awaiting the sequel: The Gilded Ones (The Gilded Ones, #1) by Namina Forna - breaks certain YA tropes
And a comfort read with some minor issues : European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman (The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club, #2) by Theodora Goss

message 14: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 65 comments August
Planned reads :
The Sinister Mystery of the Mesmerizing Girl (The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club, #3) by Theodora Goss Heir of Novron (The Riyria Revelations, #5-6) by Michael J. Sullivan Doctor Sleep by Stephen King Network Effect (The Murderbot Diaries, #5) by Martha Wells

Will be re-reading : The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1) by N.K. Jemisin

message 15: by Tawallah (new)

Tawallah | 65 comments It has been a while. August was the beginning of a time of great ambition followed by a month I would love to pretend never occurred.

I finished Heir of Novron (The Riyria Revelations, #5-6) by Michael J. Sullivan - this was the best book of the series and I am still not ready to accept the end of Hadrian and Royce for now. Definitely looking forward to a re-read. But for now - the prequel series.

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King and The Waste Lands (The Dark Tower, #3) by Stephen King - still waiting for me to crack open and read them.

Network Effect (The Murderbot Diaries, #5) by Martha Wells - after reading books 2-4 in anticipation of this book in August, I just could not concentrate on the first 2 chapters so put it down. In November, those two chpaters were still a struggle as I realize there was flashbacks. Anyway, liked enough but was a little disappointed and will listen again as still clueless about the whole alien aspect and its relevance.

Fugitive Telemetry (The Murderbot Diaries, #6) by Martha Wells - this was a return to form here and I just adore the concept of a MurderBot solving a ......... murder.

So all caught up on the MurderBot diaries.

I have decided to restart the Expanse series in 2022 from the beginning, a book a month.

The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1) by N.K. Jemisin - I read this again in August. My plan was to look at this series through the lens of motherhood. I liked it more the second time around, even finding a major plot hole. Still yet to pick up the next book which I enjoyed more than this one- The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth, #2) by N.K. Jemisin

Tawallah | 65 comments So my plans for the rest of the year:

Dresden Files
Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher - meh beginning for me. But to continue with Fool Moon (The Dresden Files, #2) by Jim Butcher ( another weak entry apparently).

A Cavern of Black Ice (Sword of Shadows, #1) by J.V. Jones - want to read this, an under-rated older fantasy

The Curse of the Mistwraith (Wars of Light and Shadow, #1) by Janny Wurts - a readalong I jumped into as this is complex and there will be discussions.

The Dragonbone Chair (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #1) by Tad Williams - a buddy read and to continue the series in 2022

Not sure what other series I can continue to dabble in to try and complete.
