Hello, Team Orchid!

This week, you will be working together to complete a series of prompts. While some prompts only require one single book, others will require 2 or 3 or 4!

Use your spreadsheet to track which prompts you've completed, as well as any Wild Cards you've earned. Please place only completed books on the Tracking tab, and use the Planning tab for planning purposes.

*Wild Cards: For every 1000 pages read or 15 hours of audio listened, you will earned one Wild Card, which can be used in the place of one book. Your spreadsheet will track how many Wild Cards you've earned and used.

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Hi team! I have four days off work next week so I should get some extra reading time in :)

message 3: by Jill (new)

Jill | 738 comments Hi everyone! Currently in Arizona visiting my mom but will be heading home to California on Sunday. Have 5 hours left in my audio book that will finish up during my drive. Looking forward to a fun week of reading and sharing!

message 4: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 617 comments Hello from chilly England. I expect tomorrow to be busy but to have plenty of time after that. The first book I was planning on reading suits a lot of prompts. As a newby, I imagine I get it read then see which gaps it can shuffle into. Is that how this works?

message 5: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments Hi Everyone! I haven’t done a team challenge in a while so I’m really looking forward to this :)

message 6: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Hi team! This will be fun, look forward to reading and chatting with you all :)

Joyce; that’s the grasp of it! You can also add your TBR books to the planning tab when you have the time, that way we can see how many options we have for each prompt :)

Joi | 43 comments heyyyyyyy y'all.

message 8: by Joi (new)

Joi | 43 comments so when does this start?

message 9: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Hello Team! I should have a lot of time to read. The weather is supposed to be icy so not much going out of the house this weekend. I'm lining up some books to read. I have a graphic novel and I'm currently listening to a long audio. Figuring out what actual books to read.

message 12: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 617 comments Hi, I don’t have and don’t want a Google account so I won’t be editing the spreadsheet but my first book planned is Face by Benjamin Zephaniah Face which fits book related to self-respect, debut and one person on cover. And I dare say more once I’ve read it!

message 13: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11295 comments Mod
Hi Joyce! You should be able to edit the spreadsheet without creating a google account. Anyone with the link should be able to edit it without having to sign in to anything.

message 14: by Hilde (last edited Feb 12, 2021 11:03AM) (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Hi team!

I added my current reads to the spreadsheet in the planning tab. I have started The Sun Also Rises and Mørketid and plan to start Kunsten å være den man er/(A Well-Tempered Heart) tomorrow. I will probably not finish them all, but we'll see.

@Joyce; Like Emily said you don't need a google account to edit the spreadsheet, but you will need to open it through a computer or browser on your phone, as the app will only give you read- and not write access. Edit just to say I added Face for you in the spreadsheet.

Joyce | 617 comments Emily wrote: "Hi Joyce! You should be able to edit the spreadsheet without creating a google account. Anyone with the link should be able to edit it without having to sign in to anything."
Looks like I can do it on a laptop running Firefox but an IPad running Safari wants Google Sheets which wants me to sign in. Not entirely convinced I should be trusted with a spreadsheet but I do now have a way to make it work.

PS Thanks Hilde

message 16: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments I've added the books I have planned so far the the spreadsheet and the potential categories that I can tell so far.

message 17: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11295 comments Mod
Joyce, it's absolutely not required that you contribute to the spreadsheet to participate in the fun! Just make sure you are posting your pages read, audio listened to, and book completions so your team captain can track it!

message 18: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2132 comments Go Team Orchid!

I went through and added the 2 books I'm currently reading and the 2 I am definitely going to read over the next week to the planning folder. I'm looking forward to the next week. I'm in Saskatchewan, Canada, so that's 2 hours later then the West Coast, but I'm a major night owl, so I'll be on late, but mornings are not really my thing. 😏

message 19: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Hi!

I think we are spread all over the world, that’s exciting. I am checking in from Norway, where it’s already early afternoon (where did the morning go?!). It’s cold, but sunny here with a little snow, and it has been that way for weeks. Really beautiful outside, which is great as we are still in a mild lockdown and I try to take advantage with long walks outside everyday. I’m (still!!) working from home, and am starting to get really tired of only seeing my co-workers through teams. And we’re into the busy season at work, meaning I spend way too many hours in front at the computer these days. So the weekend and the read-a-thon is appreciated to try to catch up on some reading:)

Where in the world are the rest of you located?

message 20: by Joi (new)

Joi | 43 comments Maybe y'all can help me right quick.

Are we individually trying to do each prompt---or as a team trying to complete all of the prompts?

message 21: by Jill (new)

Jill | 738 comments As a team we are trying to complete as many of the prompts as possible.

Hi Hilde!

I live in Los Angeles, California. I am currently in Arizona wrapping up a two week visit with my mom. I am heading home tomorrow. The lockdowns have been tough on her as she lives alone so I needed to come spend some time with her.

message 23: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I live in the United States in Virginia. We are currently having an ice storm here and we have no power. Perfect reading day. We are watching a lot of tree limbs fall outside. Most of the area is out of power so I’m guessing we won’t have it back for awhile. Luckily we have a wood stove in the house.

message 24: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments I woke up to snow the morning so it will be a cozy day for reading. Joan we lost power last week with strong winds, but we have a wood stove too :)

There are different prompts to try and fill for an individual challenge which can be found here

message 26: by Ira (last edited Feb 13, 2021 01:29PM) (new)

Ira | 361 comments Hi team. I check in from Norway as well. I live in a town called Stavanger. Sorry I am late to check in, but this day proved to be more busy than expected. I am in the middle of listening to Defending the Galaxy by Maria V. Snyder. I have no idea where it fits, but it is a high priority book for me. I managed to listen to 4 hours today.

message 27: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 617 comments Well I’m off plan already. I got bored last night and started a quick-read Life and Other Near-Death Experiences which I finished today (112 pages). From the top it counts as:
Theme of hope
Fresh start
Moves to a new home
Starts with L

The cover has a sun and waves if anyone can match that.

I’m tempted to also say coming of age but the protagonist is 34 dammit so not that.

message 28: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments How fun, so far we have US, UK, Canada and Norway represented on our team :)

@Jill, I spend a month in California some years ago, doing a road-trip through California and Nevada. It was a lovely trip, we really enjoyed all the nice cities, places and scenaries. I particularly loved Napa Valley, Grand Canyon and San Fransisco. And I still remember my high pulse when driving in LA, that was a bit scary when you don't know the city for sure!

How great that you were able to go spend some time with your mother, that must have done the both of you good. I really hope the roll-ouf of the vaccines will hurry up.

@Joyce, great job with finishing the first book for the team.

I got in some pages and audio hours today, but didn't finish anything. I'll go update the spreadsheet now, and then I am off to bed.

Happy reading, and enjoy your Saturday evening for those of you still having some hours of the day left :)

So far in the plans, no one had a book for someone moves to a new home, but the starts with L was also low, so I think it might be best to use it there for now. I know you mentioned having problems with adding to the spreadsheet, so I'll just add it for you if that's okay.

message 31: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2132 comments I just finished Sailor Moon Eternal Edition 3 so I entered it for the book with themes of friendship.

message 32: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments I just finished Legendborn and added it as the second title that starts with L and checked off the prompt in the completed column on the right side of the spreadsheet.

I'll start Honey Girl tonight and will most likely finish it tomorrow.

message 33: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments I've started listening to Call Me By Your Name. Will fit into coming of age or more likely LGBTQIA. They start out more trying to ignore each other than as enemies.

message 34: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2132 comments I finished another book. It was Inside Out & Back Again. It's about a young girl moving from Vietnam to Alabama after the war. It was beautiful, sweet, funny and I am so glad I read it. Given how much it connects to the 'moves to a new place' prompt I used it for that, but it doesn't feature a romantic relationship, so I might switch it to that one later on.

message 35: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Hey Team! We lost power yesterday and cell service has been really bad too. Will post when I can. I read 108 pages yesterday if someone can post that for me. I can’t get on google sheets right now!!! Thanks!

I've updated it for you, Joan. Hope your power's back soon!

message 37: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Hope the storms blows over soon, Joan!

I am about to start the *exciting* task of cleaning the house, so hope to get some audio time in while doing that.

message 38: by Jill (new)

Jill | 738 comments I read 179 pages yesterday and finished Red at the Bone. I slotted it for book one of a book that spans more than 10 years. I will be finishing an audio book today that also spans more than 10 years so we will only need one more book to complete that prompt.

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Great first day everyone!

I just finished Poison which fits quite a few prompts. I'll slot it into a book with no romance for now but we can move it if needed :)

message 40: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2132 comments Way to go for the first day! As a team, we got 6 prompts knocked off and we earned 2 wild cards already. Go us!

message 41: by Joi (new)

Joi | 43 comments I finished a book but don't know how to put it in.

These Violent Delights by Micah Nemerever

Sarah (sezziy) | 614 comments Joi wrote: "I finished a book but don't know how to put it in.

You can pop it into whichever prompt it works for on the first page of the spreadsheet under your name, or if you can't access the spreadsheet, just post here which one it works for and we can update it for you :)

message 43: by Joyce (new)

Joyce | 617 comments Today I finished Face which, as well as the boxes already ticked on the planning spreadsheet, may also help with 3 protagonists of various ages as the main character is 15.

I also finished the third part of the Killing Eve Trilogy Die for Me (Killing Eve #3) by Luke Jennings Die for Me which works for LGBTQIA+ love story and two people on the cover.

Now, because I’m ready for something more substantial and because I don’t want Shakespeare to be entirely neglected, I’m starting Falstaff. It’s 450 pages of small type so I may be a while.

Since I’ve let let myself out of updating the spreadsheet, can someone put me down for 112 pages yesterday and 437 today? Thanks.

Which prompt were you thinking of using it for?

message 45: by Kendra (new)

Kendra | 2132 comments I finished off another book - The Dirty Streets of Heaven which I used for a book with an enemies to lovers plot.

message 46: by Perri (new)

Perri | 886 comments I power read the rest of Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family today-such an interesting book. I marked if for a book covering a decade and for siblings in the challenge. Highly recommend if you're interested in mental illness and progress(or the lack of it) in treatment of schizophrenia

message 47: by Kristina (new)

Kristina | 245 comments I've finished Honey Girl. I slotted it as the second LGBTQIA+ book featuring a love story, but it would also fit a debut book, one person on the cover, and book by a woman if needed.

Hilde (hilded) | 821 comments Kristina wrote: "I've finished Honey Girl. I slotted it as the second LGBTQIA+ book featuring a love story, but it would also fit a debut book, one person on the cover, and book by a woman if needed."

Was it good, Kristina? So many people seems to love this, maybe it should go on the never-ending TBR.

message 49: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments Power is still out. For Sunday I read 231 pages. I’m almost done I Let You Go. Assuming work has power I can probably update stuff today. I should be able to listen to audio on the way to wrk today.

I liked it but didn't love it. I would recommend it for anyone who likes more character-driven, emotional/reflective stories, and I did like the diverse perspective and representation. Also, there's strong theme of mental health and finding one's place in the world.
