You don't need to use the planning tab now that we are in the middle of the readathon. You can just see what's available on the regular spreadsheet.

Yea I've been referencing the planning tab just to see if we should put Wild Cards anywhere (I get antsy having so many build up lol) but we can always move those if you have a book that fits.

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I just did a quick reread of The Fairy Rebel, for all the childhood nostalgia feels, and put it into one of the “warm and fuzzy” slots.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3268 comments 167 more pages of Red, White & Royal Blue. Although I'm realizing now that someone else already read the same book, so I guess it can't be counted for anything when I finish it off tomorrow?

Sounds like a plan.

BTW, I managed 197pg of Writing All Wrongs yesterday, and hope to finish it today. One of the secondary characters, who does get quite a bit of page time and knows all the about the place, is the "oldest man on the island", at 94. Do you reckon that's enough for an "featuring an elderly character".

Otherwise, it will fit in the pets and friendships prompts - anyone have a preference where I put it?

BTW, I put Hamlet, Revenge! into the second Shakespeare prompt, but it would also fit in "Three books in which a romantic love story is not featured". If anyone else has a Shakespeare offer, then HR could move there, which I suspect might be harder to fill.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1195 comments Mod
Me again. I've finished Writing All Wrongs for another 77pg. For now, I've put it in the pets prompt, but if someone wants to move it, that's fine.

message 57: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11189 comments Mod
Rachel, you can count it! You just can't use the same book read by the same person more than once... two people can read the same book and each count it.

Trish, I think we should fill in prompts that require the most books, but I agree that Shakespeare is difficult... I think you placed them well.

Good morning Tulips! It's another cold day but my husband is going to work so I'll be able to knock out at least All Boys Aren't Blue today and get started on another... maybe Not So Pure and Simple, which is a YA romcom.

Good job, everyone! I think Shakespeare is a harder one than "no romantic love story", where many nonfiction books could be placed.

I think I will finish the audio today of The Year of the Hare. It fits under pets and maybe somewhere else. Also might finish the mystery Death of a Busybody, not sure where that will go. I picked them both for this week just because they are short.

message 59: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) I'm reading Smoke Gets in Your Eyes & Other Lessons from the Crematory which has a lot of "warmth" and ashes floating around making things fuzzy. Think I can put this under books that make you warm and fuzzy? (Also it's a pretty good read if you want to learn about how crematoriums and the funeral industry works). Otherwise I'll find somewhere else to put it.

Finished the audio book Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds & Shape Our Futures which has no romantic love story to it so I put it in there.

message 60: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3992 comments Mod
I think that is a very creative take, Jax, on the "warm and fuzzy"

I finished Death of a Busybody and put it under self-care. One of the suspects is an avid birdwatcher and he introduces the detective to the hobby, which brings the detective lots of pleasure.

message 61: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Just finished A Chorus Rises and put it in for “just one person on the cover.” It doesn’t fit that much else of what’s remaining, but could be moved to one of the “protagonists at different stages of life” slots if needed later- the protagonist is a teenager, which seems pretty easy to get with other books, but, just in case. :)

message 62: by Trish, Annular Mod (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 1195 comments Mod
Total change of plan. I'm currently reading Cockatiels at Seven, and I'd forgotten it had three generations in it: grandfather, father, daughter. There's also a toddler around. So it ought to work for "Three books featuring protagonists at different stages of life"" as well as a few others.

message 63: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11189 comments Mod
Hm I wonder if I worded that one correctly.

What I was intending was three books that had protagonists at three different ages, so one book featuring a teenager, another with an adult, and another with someone who is elderly. Is that how y'all understood it?

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Emily wrote: "Hm I wonder if I worded that one correctly.

That’s how I understood it, Emily. So for A Chorus Rises, as I just finished it, I could put it in one of the three slots, with its teenage protagonist, and then the other two slots would need to be filled by, for example, one book about an elderly person and one book about an adult, or one book about a young child and one about someone middle-aged. Right?

(I figured books starring teenagers is pretty easy to get, so I’d leave it open, but if I read a Miss Marple book this week, it might be a good start on this set of prompts, with an elderly protagonist 😅)

Kellie Lyn | 211 comments Hey there all, I finished Little Fires Everywhere. I will have to update the spreadsheet when we have power. 56 hours and counting with no lights is making for a very adventurous week. Not sure how much I will be able to help the rest of the week. They are saying no power or water through the weekend, since the weather is supposed to get crazy again tonight. Sorry about bailing out.

I think I took it the other way, like a character ages through different stages of life, but your way makes sense.

Kellie, do not worry! Update us when you can, and we can transfer your info to the spreadsheet if that's easier for you (I put Little Fires Everywhere for a book that starts with the letter "L"). I'm thinking about y'all.. my cousin in Katy got power back after being out for 36 hours, and I know how hard it is!

I am about halfway through Ask Again, Yes. It could work for a book about friendship, or a book where a character moves to a new home or a book that spans more than 10 years.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3268 comments I finished off Red, White & Royal Blue and also got started on A Curse So Dark and Lonely. I won't be able to check in again until after work tomorrow, so feel free to count RWRB wherever needed.

I thought it meant three generations in the same book - there's a similar PS post this year, plus there was a whole seperate pair of tasks for elderly characters and also one for YA rom com. Never mind. Nothing to see here...

In the meantime, I did get 142 pages of Cockatiels read yesterday, and hope to finish it today. Although it looks like I'm running out of places to put it. I could go for Adult protagonist, elderly character (probably either the father or the grandfather), "warm and fuzzy" (it's from one of my go to comfort read series), or female author. Any preferences?

message 76: by Emily, Conterminous Mod (new)

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 11189 comments Mod
Trish, I'd say we get started on those three generations levels... just make sure you mark which age group you're using it for.

I haven't started another book yet, but I have some errands to run today so I hope to read in the waiting rooms. I'm hoping to have two more books finished this week, so I need to get a move on lol.

Okey dokey. I just finished it, so I'll add it to the spreadsheet.

Next up, The Galaxy, and the Ground Within, which was just published today. I reckon it has a pretty inspiring cover, so that might work:
The Galaxy, and the Ground Within (Wayfarers, #4) by Becky Chambers

Other options: female author, and possibly, at this point, "Three books in which a romantic love story is not featured"

We are well stocked for Wild Cards. I should finish my audio of The Year of the Hare today, which goes under characters with pets, where we need 1 more.

Kellie Lyn | 211 comments Hello Team Tulip, Greetings from Houston, Texas. The power is back! I am currently reading Every Dead Thing and should finish tonight. Not sure where it came from but it was downloaded on my Kindle already so it is the one I could read. It would fit for middle aged person if we do not have that covered in the different age groups. Also would work for no romantic love (crime drama). Next up is Eleanor & Park which is a YA romance.

Yay for electricity, Kellie!

I started Not So Pure and Simple and should finish it tomorrow, and it's a YA rom-com. So you can use Eleanor & Park for either the YA age group or the rom-com, and I'll use mine for the opposite.

Read just over half of The Galaxy, and the Ground Within (168pg), so hopefully I'll finish that today.

Update. I've finished it, and for now I've put it in as one of the "three books in which a romantic love story is not featured". If someone else has that in hand, then it could move to be the female half of "A book written by a male and a book written by a female" or it could equally go for the "Child" entry for the "Three books featuring protagonists at different stages of life"

Emily, what happens if we finish all the prompts? Just curious, as given how many wild cards we have, we're nearly there!

BTW, I'm going to have a change of plan, as there only seems to be one of the "hearts on the cover" books in the planning sheet. and I got this last week:
Parker Pyne Investigates by Agatha Christie

It's not easy to see, but there is a heart around the book title.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3268 comments I somehow didn't even manage to finish A Curse So Dark and Lonely today but I'm pretty close to the end. Hoping to finish that off tomorrow, and then read the next book in the series before the readathon ends, but I have some work to do tomorrow so that might interfere.

message 91: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments I'm almost done with The A.B.C. Murders, and I can put that in for the last "roommates who aren't romantically involved" prompt - I'll probably finish tonight. Also nearly done with Phoenix Flame, which can work for protags at different stages of life - teenage protagonist - or female author. I should finish that tomorrow.

I'm hoping to also be able to finish The Honey-Don't List before the end of the readathon, which has hearts alllll over the cover. I might even finish it tomorrow, if I zip through Phoenix Flame. :)

message 92: by Roxana (new)

Roxana (luminate) | 775 comments Oh, also totally forgot I was planning to do a quick reread of the Westmark trilogy tomorrow, or at least the first two - those are quite short, but over 100 pages, so they should be useful for something! If nothing else, they're by a male author, and definitely give me warm & fuzzy feelings, I loved them growing up. And the second one arguably has an inspiring cover (it's about a revolution).

Kellie Lyn | 211 comments I finally finished Every Dead Thing and Eleanor & Park. I put Every Dead Thing as the last life stage middle age (36). It could be put in a book with no romantic love if needed. I put Eleanor & Park in the other YA RomCom. I am starting Fences and should finish it tonight. Not sure where it will fit but I need it for my second winter challenge (only 4 books left). I will look for somewhere when I finish.
