I prefer standalones. There are too many series which didn't work for me (for instance the ones from V. C. Andrews or Sara Donati (only vol. 1 was great) or Régine Desforges).
Exception from the rule: I prefer the next 3 books on Tom Ripley by Patricia Highsmith compared with vol. 1 "The Talented Mr. Ripley". Vol. 5 "Ripley Under Water" was the weakest.
Some sequels in the John Corey series by Nelson DeMille are well written. I enjoyed most of Peter Robinson's DCI banks series, but it contains a few duds.
I think it's the publishing houses' pressure that makes the authors write series.
