I am 12 but i love YA books I dont mind them or the explicit scenes

Same, I’m also 12 but I love YA and don’t really mind explicit scenes

That's actually pretty much where I was when I was 20. I've gotten a lot more comfortable with the topic since, just little active interest from my side. I don't really have a label on my sexuality currently, I guess "gray ace" sorta fits...but I relate to the entire low drive and confusion over sexuality thing. Though in my case, I think a lot of it was also growing up in an environment where the topic is at first so taboo and then suddenly it's the most normal thing ever and if you haven't done it or haven't figured it out for yourself it's instantly a sign of immaturity...like of course that makes it harder to think about it. And books where it's only portrayed as a "primal urge" or whatever didn't help either, the entire idea that it's just an irresistible urge overcoming a person was really creepy to me and in my opinion is also very inaccurate...like your brain aint logging off the realm for a little bit of hormones, man. Only now after reading some scenes like that that genuinely served to develop characters and relationships I've started enjoying them more, though I'm not sure yet whether it's only for those specific reasons or others.

I'm at the point where if I even mention the word "book" in a sentence my parents' brains just shut off and they stop listening to me. They don't mind what I read, as long as its age-appropriate. I haven't actually read that many "explicit" scenes, maybe only one or two, and they weren't very graphic

I'm 18 and straight, and I hate them, it's not just an ace thing lol. It's usually very awkward writing and it's uncomfortable to read. I feel like a lot of authors add it because they can, not because they should.

lmao I definitely believed that too, then at some point my mom mentioned how when she's Christmas gift shopping she's sometimes a little concerned about the books she's getting us, so...she was better informed than I thought, lol.

Not gonna lie, unless they're particularly questionable, I find awkward explicit scenes a fantastic source of unintentional comedy. Like, when they make it sound like some sort of IKEA instructions, or when it's just way too over the top or absurd in some way, I don't know, that's just way too funny to me.
I'm a young teen and I generally just skip them. they don't make me very uncomfortable, but they just don't interest me and I don't feel that they always add to the storyline. so, I just go to the next chapter or line break and read from there.

Young adults are still impressionable and I understand sex sells...but realism to me would be better. That way I could relate and laugh about it as I'm reading...like "Yup...I remember...or that's exactly how it is the first time!"
The book series Havoc at Prescott High by C.M Steinen had me questioning my young adult daughter. I asked her "Is that what 17 year old girls are doing now?"
Just my opinion.
I've noticed a bunch of popular books going around that have some pretty explicit scenes. You know the ones. Now I was wondering - how do you guys feel about them? Do you enjoy them? Do you just skip them? Does it depend on the people involved? A lot of fantasy books, especially some marketed as "young adult" have a fair or even pretty extensive focus on explicit scenes. Do you pick them up for that, or is it more of a side effect of just wanting to read fantasy? And at what age did you start reading those scenes or felt like you were mature enough to read them?
