Matthew | 3 comments Some books are collections of separately published books. Is it possible to add a book from a collection as a separate edition?

For example, Republic by Plato is ~250 pages. It has been published within the 1800 page book of Plato's Complete Works.

Plato: Complete Works

Is it possible (and allowed) to add this version of Republic as a separate edition under the page for Republic?

The Republic

I've seen that some people have already done this but I'm not sure if it's officially endorsed.

Elizabeth (Alaska) No, complete works is one edition. There is nothing stopping you from rating/reviewing the individual title on one of the individual editions.

EDIT: My answer was for digital editions where the edition is truly the complete works. However, sometimes each volume in a set of books will have its own ISBN or be clearly a separate volume. In those cases, they can be entered separately and combined with the individual titles.

So the real answer is, "it depends".

Matthew | 3 comments Thanks for the info. The reason I'd asked was because of the large disparity in page count between books from a collection and from individual publications rather than any issues with reviews/ratings.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Well, yes. Works that include many books will have a higher page count than works that include just one book. Why would it matter unless you were reviewing/rating just the single title?

Matthew | 3 comments No, what I mean is that if I only read part of a collection then if I want to add those parts to my profile, I need to add a separate publication which will give me an incorrect number of pages read.

For example, the first work in Plato's Complete Works is 16 pages long (Euthyphro). As you said, if I want to add it to my profile then I'd need to add a separately published edition. The issue is that this will inflate my "pages read" count as each individually published edition often comes with introductions/preambles etc.

The default edition of Euthyphro is 128 pages, eight times longer than in the Compete Works. Many of the other editions are of a similar length.

My original motivation was to see if I could avoid massively bloating my "pages read" count. Adding a single book from a collection isn't an issue but if I was to add 10 or 15 separate works then it would greatly distort my "pages read" count.

From your replies I see that isn't possible so I'll just refrain from adding shorter works like this and avoid the issue.
