I'd like to thank the academy....

My insistence on keeping Memorial around will probably be my undoing. Just like with Normal People, I'm so surprised when people don't like it. Then again, *dance dance*, just like Normal People, maybe it takes the whole thing *dance dance*!

Jason Perdue | 688 comments So, after filling in my bracket, I randomly picked a winner for each matchup and then again for each round and then all the books left over to pick zombies and so on. In the end, it picked The Resisters (as a zombie) to win it all so I kinda forgot about it.

Today, I calculated where it would be if it had been entered and it has 12 points!

Heather (hlynhart) | 410 comments Whoo hoo! I'm 6 for 7 currently. I'm sure to fall apart later (I had my one miss, Transcendent Kingdom, going pretty far) so I'll savor it while I can.

today and Luster's demise are my only misses.... but I had Luster taking the tourney so I'm pretty sure I'm screwed!

Kip Kyburz (kybrz) | 541 comments I had Piranesi as a zombie and The Vanishing Half in the final, glad to see they are current zombies. Also I want more discussion of Piranesi.

Amy (asawatzky) | 1743 comments None of the frontrunners from yesterday picked Leave the World Behind so our leaderboard didn't change much but I'm anticipating a pretty crazy week next week once the picks are weighed more!

Phyllis | 785 comments I'm 4 out of 8 going into the quarter rounds and feeling fortunate that I successfully picked one of the books in each round. I seriously doubt though that I'll hold on to even 50% accuracy going forward.

It looks like your the only one who has a chance to pick all four semifinalist right. There are 7 entries that can get 3 of 4.

Phyllis | 785 comments Brock wrote: "looks like your the only one who has a chance to pick all four semifinalist right"

Well that's a fun spot to be in for 24 hours at least!

Jason Perdue | 688 comments Well, they just revealed that Sharks doesn’t have the zombie votes so my bracket is toast. Only my winner pick of Interior Chinatown keeps me watching the standings.

Phyllis | 785 comments I'm thinking there should be a special award for calling every opening round & the play-in for the losing book. That must make a person very sad and in need of some special consolation.

Haha, I love that, a booby prize. I was thinking I must be in last place, but no! Only next to last! Huzzah!

We could call it The Cooler

Excellent!

Kip Kyburz (kybrz) | 541 comments My two passions are basketball and books, and I am too emotional to make a good bracket in either one it turns out.

Jason Perdue | 688 comments Woah. I had no idea that the IC win would be worth 6 points.

Phyllis | 785 comments Jason wrote: "Woah. I had no idea that the IC win would be worth 6 points."

Go go go Jason - you're on a roll now.

Jason Perdue | 688 comments Interior Chinatown or Bust! I have no other books left. I was surprised Deacon King Kong didn't get more zombie votes considering how many people picked it to win.

Lauren Oertel | 1390 comments It looks like we have some folks with predictions of IC, TVH, and Piranesi, but no one guessed B&E or RP taking the Rooster, so there could be quite an upset!

Bretnie | 717 comments Ellen, I'm giving you quite the competition for last place! :)

message 71: by Brock (new)

Brock Stevens | 18 comments Only in the TOB Bracket Competition can some one miss the first 16 match-ups and still pick the Champion. Hayley can do it with her pick of The Vanishing Half going all the way to the winner's circle.

That would be quite the feat! Should we suggest to March Madness that they incorporate a zombie round??

message 73: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy (asawatzky) | 1743 comments I personally assumed Breasts and Eggs was a Seed 4 and would count as an upset but they seeded it #3 and Telephone #4 despite Everett’s extensive backlist. So the only upset in Quarterfinals was Jason’s Interior Chinatown pick!

Amy (asawatzky) | 1743 comments lots of movement today in the leaderboard due to the zombies settling (or rather not moving from the end of the opening rounds) Heather once again takes the lead.

Phyllis | 785 comments Yup, I am officially out of the running on the brackets. No more points available for my poor guessing.

Ellen H | 986 comments Bretnie wrote: "Ellen, I'm giving you quite the competition for last place! :)"

Bretnie, we'll just sit here at the bottom, swinging our feet and watching the action as it happens. I'll bring snacks.

message 78: by Brock (new)

Brock Stevens | 18 comments By my calculations:
Jason wins if Interior Chinatown wins it all.
Sophia wins if Piranesi or Breasts and Eggs is the Champion.
Gayla wins if The Vanishing Half beats Interior Chinatown in the final.
Heather wins if VH beats Piranesi.

Is that correct?

Ellen H | 986 comments ...and Bretnie and I lose no matter what. Pass the popcorn, Bretnie!

Elizabeth Arnold | 1314 comments Wait, wait! I just checked and I'm officially in last place! This is cracking me up. I've come close before but never actually failed so brilliantly!

Ellen H | 986 comments Oh, great, Elizabeth! Feel free to join us! Have some chocolate!

Ellen H | 986 comments (P.S. Am I slightly redeemed if Piranesi makes the final? I did have it in the final two, losing vs. Deacon King Kong.)

Ooo that's exciting we still have a bunch of potential winners! Y'all should update your "want to read" shelves on here just in case. ;) I plan to send something from one of the bookstores featured in the booth to the winner.

pssst - you're not actually in last place, just the bottom of the top 20. :) last place is currently being held by Hayley in 34th place with 0 points. She COULD move up though if Vanishing Half pulls off a win because she has it winning the tourney.

Hayley's tough to beat with EVERY opening Round wrong (I'd love someone to run the odds on that!)

Oh darn, I can't even succeed in failing! I will try harder next year!

Bretnie | 717 comments Ha, I should have known there were more than 20 of us! :)

Heidi (heidikatherine) | 92 comments I’d love to go back and compare correct guesses from previous years (like how accurate we have been in the past) because this year feel like it has just been upset after upset!

Incredibly impressed by those who are doing well and cannot WAIT to buy a book for the winner

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 642 comments And now I'm 19th and I'm pretty sure it won't get better!

Too funny.

If you give each book an equal probability of being chosen, and don’t know which book will win the play-in round ahead of the opening round, I come up with a 0.6% chance to get the entire opening round wrong. Even if you assume a 100% chance of being wrong by picking Tender is the Flesh to advance (hehe) you still only have a 1.2% chance of being entirely wrong.

Phyllis | 785 comments If The Vanishing Half were to win tomorrow and Wednesday, Gayla will be staging a real come from behind bracket competition win. And Hayley will have to surrender her total loss score.

Heather (hlynhart) | 410 comments Not sure if I checked all possibilities correctly, but it looks like my only chance to keep 1st place is if Breasts and Eggs ends up winning it all. Go Breasts and Eggs!!!

Amy (asawatzky) | 1743 comments It’s alive! The Vanishing Half v Breasts and Eggs - https://themorningnews.org/tob/2021/b...

Jason Perdue | 688 comments One more match. Good luck, Gayla.

From the commentariat votes, it looks like you're the underdog. I love rooting for an underdog, but since TVH was a 1-seed (and #1 NYT lister) and IC was a #2, it's debatable who the real underdog is.

message 98: by Amy (new) - added it

Amy (asawatzky) | 1743 comments woot woot! Jason's our big winner! I don't think we've had the winner unknown going into the final championship since we started the brackets contest in GR (granted this is the 3rd or 4th one) so this was a nail-biter!
Jason, let's connect you with Andrew from TMN so he can hook you up with some merch!
