I was trying to think of general bookish topics.
I like these ideas, Wendy and Hugh. Perhaps we could also talk about our involvement with the M&G group (lurker vs active participant, prizes/threads we follow, if/how the group has changed our reading habits, etc.) If nothing else, I think it would be fun to just meet everyone -- to put faces and voices to names.
As for time, I am also flexible.

This sounds an excellent idea.
Weekends are probably best since we are dealing multiple time zones. Perhaps people who are interest should report their time zone so we know how many times to accommodate.

Sunday is good for me and I am Eastern Standard Time. Which 5 hours behind Greenwich Meantime.
Sundays are also good for me. I'm also on Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5).
I can do this Sunday if the others can.

A Valentine's day meet up sounds perfect!Is that a universal thing though Valentine's day? In Korea, only women give men gifts on Feb 14th. Men then return the favour on White Day on March 14th. Then on April 14th its Black Day when any lonely singleton who didn't get or give a gift the previous two months eats black bean noodles to signal their depression!

It does not seem a great day for a meeting to me - I would think a few members have partners who already think that books are a third person in their relationship - spending 14th Feb with them might be a step too far.

Hi all. Is it okay if some complete strangers, such as yours truly, join in? I have been a very long-time lurker (from Trevor's blogging days on mookseandgripes, before this Goodreads group came into being), and have very occasionally put in a comment or two, though not for over a year. But I visit this group very often, and it would be cool to put faces and voices to the names here.
I'd love to join in on this and the 21st is fine for a date. I'm pretty open on the time. I get up super early for my time zone, so probably function more in EST time. I've been quite busy reading for a committee I joined so I haven't been participating as much, but I'm following and am just starting The Mermaid of Black Conch.

21st at 1 EST (6 GMT) works for me.We do have Valentines Day here, but that doesn’t take up anytime in my house. I usually forget that it’s the 14th and sometimes my husband remembers and gives me a gift card to B&N.
I love the Black Day when single people eat black beans! Although according to data only single men would be eating black beans of sadness, single women would be too busy having adventures to be sad.
Valentine's day here per Korean custom I only receive not give gifts. And Mar 14th is my birthday so that means I also receive gifts them. That said I do eat black bean noodles on Apr 14th, mainly as we eat them rather regularly in any case.

March 14th was scheduled for my birth (through C-section) but apparently I thought it would be better to pick the lucky 13th for my birthday so, in emergency, the C-section had to be pushed a day earlier :-)
The Korean Valentine customs sound fascinating.

Paul, do you mean you only receive gifts on the 14th and then give your sweethearts gifts on March 14 and also get birthday gifts? Vesna do you have a 13 tattoo? Everyone I know born on the 13th has a 13 tattoo.
Everyone I know, except a guy in Malta, has a #13 tattoo. True, I only three people whose birthdays are on the 13th, including that guy in Malta, and two have #13 tattoos.

Sorry Wendy- the 13 tattoo theory is not a precise one - although I’ve been thinking of getting a tiny one of theTrystero insignia made popular in Pynchon’s Crying of Lot 49 on my hip
So, you’re saying that I can’t extrapolate from the two people I know who I have birthdays on the 13th to everyone who has a birthday on the 13th?

Yes. And I don't have a 13th tattoo. Luckily I avoided that fate by 25 minutes - our mother was actually quite worried GY and I would be born either side of midnight and have different birthdays.
And if you extrapolate from the two people you know who have a birthday on the 14th to everyone who has a birthday on the 14th then they must all be genetic clones of me!
"Valentine's day" here in Barcelona is April 23... day of books and roses and therefore obviously a much better day than actual Valentine's day (which barely exists and probably only exists as a marketing effort).
April 23rd is an odd day here for the same Saint Day reason it’s celebrated in Barcelona - will be interesting to see how Brexit impacts it going forwards.
Isn't April 23 also the birthdays of both Shakespeare and Cervantes?
I think it is also the start of the traditional British asparagus season.

What a nice idea – the 21st works for me, as does 6pm GMT.
Debra has volunteered to host it, but we will need to find a time that suits as many time zones as possible and decide what the main discussion points will be, and perhaps whether the meeting needs a structured format. My preference would be something open enough to attract as wide a cross-section of the membership as possible, which probably rules out an in depth discussion of the Republic of Consciousness Prize longlist.
I am creating this topic as a place to discuss ideas - I am hoping we can make this happen!
