Some of the participants in the Galley Beggar discussion thread (starting here) would like to try and arrange some sort of Zoom discussion for Mookse group members.

Debra has volunteered to host it, but we will need to find a time that suits as many time zones as possible and decide what the main discussion points will be, and perhaps whether the meeting needs a structured format. My preference would be something open enough to attract as wide a cross-section of the membership as possible, which probably rules out an in depth discussion of the Republic of Consciousness Prize longlist.

I am creating this topic as a place to discuss ideas - I am hoping we can make this happen!

message 2: by WndyJW (new)

WndyJW I can be very flexible about time. Possible topics:
how we all found our way to Goodreads
Our earliest memory of reading
Our reading journey, how our taste in books has changed over the years

I was trying to think of general bookish topics.

message 3: by Debra (last edited Feb 03, 2021 07:29AM) (new)

Debra (debrapatek) | 539 comments I like these ideas, Wendy and Hugh. Perhaps we could also talk about our involvement with the M&G group (lurker vs active participant, prizes/threads we follow, if/how the group has changed our reading habits, etc.)

If nothing else, I think it would be fun to just meet everyone -- to put faces and voices to names.

As for time, I am also flexible.

All of these sound like interesting and inclusive topics.

Emmeline | 1031 comments I'm up for this if the time works out.

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13392 comments Would be nice to meet online certainly

message 7: by Vesna (new)

Vesna (ves_13) | 315 comments I am in. Weekends are better for me than weekdays but I'm sure something can be figured out for all. It would indeed be nice to e-meet you all.

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10083 comments This sounds an excellent idea.

message 9: by WndyJW (new)

WndyJW Weekends are probably best since we are dealing multiple time zones. Perhaps people who are interest should report their time zone so we know how many times to accommodate.

Yes, weekends would probably suit everyone best - my preference would be for a Sunday but I can do Saturdays too. I am aware that we need to cover Western Europe and most of the States - do we have anyone in Asia, Australia or New Zealand who is interested?

message 11: by Declan (new)

Declan | 197 comments A Sunday would be my preference too.

message 12: by WndyJW (new)

WndyJW Sunday is good for me and I am Eastern Standard Time. Which 5 hours behind Greenwich Meantime.

message 13: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapatek) | 539 comments Sundays are also good for me. I'm also on Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5).

message 14: by WndyJW (new)

WndyJW I can do this Sunday if the others can.

message 15: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapatek) | 539 comments I can also do this Sunday -- or any other Sunday over the next few weeks.

message 16: by Robert (new)

Robert | 2646 comments Sunday is good for me as well

Hugh (bodachliath) | 4398 comments Mod
I think this Sunday may be a bit soon - Sunday 14th might allow us a bit more time to plan and for the more occasional members to see what we are proposing.

message 18: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13392 comments A Valentine's day meet up sounds perfect!

Is that a universal thing though Valentine's day? In Korea, only women give men gifts on Feb 14th. Men then return the favour on White Day on March 14th. Then on April 14th its Black Day when any lonely singleton who didn't get or give a gift the previous two months eats black bean noodles to signal their depression!

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10083 comments It's pretty Universal

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valenti...

It does not seem a great day for a meeting to me - I would think a few members have partners who already think that books are a third person in their relationship - spending 14th Feb with them might be a step too far.

Ok then, what about the 21st?

message 21: by Robert (new)

Robert | 2646 comments good for me

message 22: by Neil (new)

Neil This sounds like fun (sorry - a bit late to the party).

21st works for me, I think.

So 21 Feb is looking good so far. So what about the time. When we did something similar in the Newest Literary Fiction group a few weeks ago, the start time was 6 pm GMT (1 pm EST), which worked for Marcus in New Zealand, but that would be night for anyone in east Asia (does this matter?). Any other suggestions?

message 26: by Margaret (new)

Margaret I'd be interested as well. Not sure I can do the 21st but if I can be there I will. Thanks for organizing this.

message 27: by jayantshaq (new)

jayantshaq | 15 comments Hi all. Is it okay if some complete strangers, such as yours truly, join in? I have been a very long-time lurker (from Trevor's blogging days on mookseandgripes, before this Goodreads group came into being), and have very occasionally put in a comment or two, though not for over a year. But I visit this group very often, and it would be cool to put faces and voices to the names here.

message 28: by Karen Michele (new)

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 209 comments I'd love to join in on this and the 21st is fine for a date. I'm pretty open on the time. I get up super early for my time zone, so probably function more in EST time. I've been quite busy reading for a committee I joined so I haven't been participating as much, but I'm following and am just starting The Mermaid of Black Conch.

I think we should be open to all members however occasional.

Thanks for saying that Hugh. I have only posted occasionally but would welcome an opportunity to meet you all on Zoom. Sundays are fine (I am EST in the US), and the 21st is also fine. Fairly flexible on time (I am an early riser).

message 31: by Debra (new)

Debra (debrapatek) | 539 comments I'm wide open on the 21st, so anytime that day works for me.

message 32: by WndyJW (last edited Feb 04, 2021 08:36AM) (new)

WndyJW 21st at 1 EST (6 GMT) works for me.

We do have Valentines Day here, but that doesn’t take up anytime in my house. I usually forget that it’s the 14th and sometimes my husband remembers and gives me a gift card to B&N.
I love the Black Day when single people eat black beans! Although according to data only single men would be eating black beans of sadness, single women would be too busy having adventures to be sad.

message 33: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13392 comments Valentine's day here per Korean custom I only receive not give gifts. And Mar 14th is my birthday so that means I also receive gifts them. That said I do eat black bean noodles on Apr 14th, mainly as we eat them rather regularly in any case.

Ha! March 14th was scheduled for my birth (through C-section) but apparently I thought it would be better to pick the lucky 13th for my birthday so, in emergency, the C-section had to be pushed a day earlier :-)

The Korean Valentine customs sound fascinating.

message 36: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tstan) | 598 comments This sounds like fun- sign me up, though I’m working, so I won’t be able to show my face/office. (I have to keep patient info confidential)

message 37: by WndyJW (new)

WndyJW Paul, do you mean you only receive gifts on the 14th and then give your sweethearts gifts on March 14 and also get birthday gifts?

Vesna do you have a 13 tattoo? Everyone I know born on the 13th has a 13 tattoo.

message 38: by Robert (new)

Robert | 2646 comments I don’t have a 13 tattoo :)

message 39: by WndyJW (last edited Feb 04, 2021 07:20PM) (new)

WndyJW Everyone I know, except a guy in Malta, has a #13 tattoo. True, I only three people whose birthdays are on the 13th, including that guy in Malta, and two have #13 tattoos.

message 40: by Vesna (new)

Vesna (ves_13) | 315 comments Haha. I've never heard of #13 tattoo. Nope, no tattoos for me :-)

message 41: by Robert (new)

Robert | 2646 comments Sorry Wendy- the 13 tattoo theory is not a precise one - although I’ve been thinking of getting a tiny one of theTrystero insignia made popular in Pynchon’s Crying of Lot 49 on my hip

message 42: by WndyJW (new)

WndyJW So, you’re saying that I can’t extrapolate from the two people I know who I have birthdays on the 13th to everyone who has a birthday on the 13th?

message 43: by Paul (new)

Paul Fulcher (fulcherkim) | 13392 comments WndyJW wrote: "Paul, do you mean you only receive gifts on the 14th and then give your sweethearts gifts on March 14 and also get birthday gifts?

Yes. And I don't have a 13th tattoo. Luckily I avoided that fate by 25 minutes - our mother was actually quite worried GY and I would be born either side of midnight and have different birthdays.

And if you extrapolate from the two people you know who have a birthday on the 14th to everyone who has a birthday on the 14th then they must all be genetic clones of me!

message 44: by Emmeline (new)

Emmeline | 1031 comments "Valentine's day" here in Barcelona is April 23... day of books and roses and therefore obviously a much better day than actual Valentine's day (which barely exists and probably only exists as a marketing effort).

Gumble's Yard - Golden Reviewer | 10083 comments April 23rd is an odd day here for the same Saint Day reason it’s celebrated in Barcelona - will be interesting to see how Brexit impacts it going forwards.

message 46: by Roman Clodia (new)

Roman Clodia | 675 comments Isn't April 23 also the birthdays of both Shakespeare and Cervantes?

message 47: by Neil (new)

Neil I think it is also the start of the traditional British asparagus season.

Can we continue this discussion of Valentine's day, birthdays etc somewhere else (e.g. Cafe Quito?) - it is distracting us from the main purpose of the thread, i.e. organising the meeting.

message 49: by Tommi (new)

Tommi | 659 comments What a nice idea – the 21st works for me, as does 6pm GMT.
