What did you make of the graphic novel?

My book (Aya part 1) just arrived today! I bought the German translation, the EN one was hard to come by...

Yes, I had to buy a bind-up of the first few books.

I also struggled to find an English copy, so got this in French. I really enjoyed it - deals with some serious topics with a very capable light touch. It really made me smile. I rarely read graphic novels but can imagine myself picking up the later instalments in this series.

I loved the graphic novel...the story and the art work were absorbing. I really felt immersed in a culture, a city, a family, a drama...like a telenovela. It was a great experience and I will continue reading whatever other books may follow.

I love graphic novels and really enjoyed this one. The story and the graphics really merged well together to immerse you into Aya‘s ( I liked Aya, immediately) world. Although, the vibe was of a fun, prosperous, carefree time on the Ivory Coast, the underlying story addresses some troubling issues. It always rattles me to read how a woman going alone, about her routine, can easily be accosted, as if that is the norm. Very troubling that this is a reality for many.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series, especially how book 1 ended.

Finished the book yesterday and really enjoyed it. Aya was maybe a bit too much in the background for me but the story of her friends was funny and well told.

I really enjoyed Aya Life in Yop City.
I was lucky to have visited Côte d'Ivoire for work, and it's amazing how much the graphics evoked the scenery and colors there.

After my first introduction to the graphic style (Persepolis by Marjane Statrapi), I've been looking for other graphic works to learn about cultures different from my own and was glad to find Aya. And even better that the lead character is an inspiring and strong woman. Like others have mentioned, despite its sense of humor, the book covers some real and timely issues. I'm glad to have read it and and plan to order the second book (which I think is #4-6 Love in Yop City).
