Fantastic. Thank you Karen.
I found a couple things you might want to update. I started looking because there should only be 1315.
In the # column, 432 is missing. When you adjust all the numbers, you will get Winter as #1314. Then the one at the bottom (original title: "Kaas" (when sorting by #) has a blank title and no #. It becomes 1315. The title should be "Cheese".

Actually, If you want to put Cheese in the right place it should be 432. That would fix everything. Giving it the title and making it 432.
Ahhhh. I had thought you had control of the spreadsheet, Karen. Now I assume you are looking at a read-only version as well.
Good info then for anybody saving their own copy. They can make their own fix.

I downloaded a spreadsheet, I guess, around 5 years ago and have no idea who did it. I've updated mine when new books wee added so I haven't looked at it since. I was trying to find out who had done it -- looks like it was originally done by Rosemary. No idea who that is. I'm going to put a note by the spreadsheet with your helpful hint!
The version I copied to make my own spreadsheet was similar to this but lacked the numbers! Sorting by that actually makes the list chronological by publishing date, right? That's a big improvement. I might have to find a way to combine this list with my own. I've already put a lot of effort into filling in my own list with which books I've read and which ones can be found at my public library or on Project Gutenberg.
I looked at the spreadsheet to see what the 2018 updates were. There are more additions than deletions. Does anyone know which other ones were deleted?I am concentrating on the 707 core books in my own spreadsheet and want to see if any of them have been deleted.
The books removed in 2018 were:
Forever a Stranger and Other Stories
The Life of Insects
Dirty Havana Trilogy
Soldiers of Salamis
The Successor
Your Face Tomorrow
The Blind Side of the Heart
Kieron Smith, Boy
The Children's Book

Thanks for the corrections! On the spreadsheet I have corrected Cheese and marked the other books removed in 2018. Lianne, it is not exactly chronological by publication date, but within a few years (so you might get one published in 1840 coming before one published in 1837, for example). I got a spreadsheet from someone else and amended it, so I don't know how the numbers were originally allocated.
I also don't know how accurate the "nationality" information is.

Thanks, two removed from the core. I had read only two of the ones that were added. Most of the added ones I had not even heard of.
I have read 627/705 in the core now.

Are you calling "the core" the ones remaining from the original 1001? or what do you mean?

On the spreadsheet, books that have been in every version of the list (so yes, those remaining from the original 1001) are labelled "core list".
I haven't intentionally focused on the core list, but last I checked almost all the books I've read from the list are from the core. The other few are ones that have been removed, like a couple of the Jane Austen books.

Very cool way to tackle the list.

The 1001 app says that there are 701 books in the core list, but it has not been updated in a while. Do you happen to know what the other 4 are?

hey everyone... and esp Karen ... the "core" was a concept I invented for the 1001 books app which I published back in 2013, had to pull, republished again in 2015 and had to pull in 2019 when the publishers refused to support it anymore. It refers to any books which have always been on the 1001 list from the first edition i.e. never added and never removed. While Karen's spreadsheet is a great resource, some of you might want something a bit more tailored. To that end, if you want to download a copy of the original official 1001 books spreadsheet, you can head to my blog at http://arukiyomi.com/?page_id=4230
As of the 2018 edition, there are 705 of these and my spreadsheet has the dates of these coloured blue.
My spreadsheet isn't free, but I'm sure you'll find it worthwhile. Unlike the apps, the spreadsheet isn't going anywhere unless I ... ahem... die which of course, we're all planning to do sometime.
;-)
Good to know the spread sheet is still around. Why are you allowed to offer the spreadsheet but not the app?

The Spreadsheet was actually developed by Rosemary. This Spreadsheet has been available, but the link to it was buried on a different Thread. I attempted to add it to the Message that Charity had posted with your link, but could not. So it was necessary to create a new Topic and delete the old Topic because none of the other links worked.
In reviewing the old Topic, I noticed that your Spreadsheet no longer linked to a google document, but to a webpage where a spreadsheet was available for purchase. In creating the new Message, I left off your Spreadsheet link because I wanted to review the Group rules as to posting advertising. I have now added your Spreadsheet link with a description.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

To give credit where credit is due, my spreadsheet was based on an old one of Arukiyomi's, and I have added the new books and deleted ones since then. I'm sure he has also added even more features to his. Thank you Arukiyomi and sorry I forgot your name so couldn't say it before!
Hmm, "Core" is a global concept that is used in many different fields, especially education and engineering which I work in.I have been using the term "Core" for the books that are common to each list since 2010 when the third edition came out.
Spreadsheets of the 1001 books have been freely floating around on the internet since 2006 with varying amounts of information and tracking features. Just as they have for other book challenges like the Mustich 1000 or the Gilmore Girls Books.
Thank you so much!! Also how do you respond directly to someone’s comment?? I’m usually tech savvy(ish) but apparently I’m not Goodreads savvy 😖

You can't reply directly on the app. On the website, you will see at the bottom of a Message -- reply. Just click on that, write your comment, and a notification will go to the person you are replying to.

So is there an app or is spreadsheet the only (or best) way to track what you’ve read? I spent the better part of the morning marking what I’ve read here but I don’t see a way to export this as a spreadsheet with my markings already in it. https://www.listchallenges.com/1001-b...

The app no longer exists. The Spreadsheet is downloadable (one is free, one is for purchase); I don't know if your changes will download. The List Challenges is a separate website. If you register (which is free), your lists will be saved, but I don't see a way to export your responses to a List Challenge.

I downloaded the Microsoft To-do app, and copied and pasted the entire list of books into a list on the app. Each book is one item on the to-do list, and I check off each book as I read it. The app syncs to a website, so I can access the list both on my phone and on my computer.

Clever idea! I'm going to have to play around with that. Can you sort the list?

For those that want a brief history. I created the first spreadsheet to follow the 1001 books list in 2006 and put it on my book blog. I'll call it the Excel spreadsheet to differentiate it from Rosemary's. I had over 40,000 downloads of this by 2010 and supporting it became time-consuming and many people in the community were urging me to charge a nominal fee for it. When the 2010 edition came out, I issued my first paid-for Excel spreadsheet.
In 2013, again in response to the community, I launched the iPhone app in partnership with and under license from Quintessence, an imprint of Quarto who are the creators of the 1001 series (hence the "official") title. In case anyone is thinking that by this point I was making a fortune out of it, by the time I had to pull the app from sale in 2018, I had literally spent thousands of dollars of my own money maintaining it and given 65% of the meagre takings as royalties to my partners.
In 2018, I had a plan to take the app (and the 1001 Movies app) to a whole new level with $5,000 of my own money as an investment. The publishers refused to support this or any further development of the app. As a result of this, and with the fact that iOS updates were rendering the app unstable, I had no choice but to pull the 1001 Books and Movies apps from sale. They still work (kind of) but you can't download them anymore.
Because the Excel spreadsheet does not require me to hire expensive developers to maintain and I can do it myself, it survived this falling out with the publishers. I'm determined that my Excel spreadsheet will last until I die or am incapacitated in some way.
I'm not precious about other people using my data, but it did take me thousands of hours to collate and build. As I know some people like to recognise the work people put in, that's why I offer my spreadsheet for sale.

I am using two lists. The first is the one created and maintained by Arukiyomi. The second is a Google-created one (by who?) that I found on this site sometime back. The title is Full 1001 Books List. It has all of the books on it, whether removed or not, and when they added, removed, and if never, core, among other information. It has through the 2018 list.
A new spreadsheet edition is available now from my blog at https://arukiyomi.com/?page_id=4230 v7 which contains changes discovered in a somewhat secretly published 2019 edition. Two books were added and two removed.
For anyone who has already purchased a spreadsheet in the past, a free v7 is available for you to update. Just ping me an email via the address in the Help tab of your current spreadsheet.

Thank you so much for updating the SS - it is such a great tracking tool! I am sadly giving up the app with a move to a new phone - I haven't gone a week without referring to it since I originally downloaded it - The new spreadsheet design is definitely a good substitute and I appreciate all your work :)

Ah, that explains why I couldn't find the books a person that follows the list mentioned... I'll ve in touch with you regarding the update of my V6 spreadsheet. Thank you so much for all your work!
