Gary | 7 comments ISBN 10: 1299667309

Selected Lives and Essays Plutarch, trans; Louise Loomis
Pub: Walter Black, 1951

This is a 2-volume in 1 book publication. Goodreads and Amazon now show 437 pages for Volume 2 only; Volume 1 which is published in same book as Volume 2 is an additional 346 pages.

The actual number of pages for this book is 783.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂  | 2332 comments Hi Gary

The ISBN 10 you have quoted leads to this book

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Could you give me the link to your book on Goodreads so I can investigate further.

Gary | 7 comments Thank you Carol for following up on this : )

Here’s a link to the book on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

There are two problems with this listing on Goodreads: its ISBN has been assigned to another book, and its page count is wrong

ISBN
The Goodreads’ listing doesn't have an ISBN number -- its ISBN has been assigned to another book. Amazon, AbeBooks, and ViaLibri all show ISBN-13 978-1299667303 for the Plutarch.. On Goodreads, that same ISBN incorrectly links to Korper-Bewusstsein: Fur Eine Philosophie Der Somasthetik. Per Amazon, Abebooks, and ViaLibri the correct ISBN-13 for Korper-Bewusstsein is 978-3787321704.

Number of pages
The Plutarch consists of two volumes in one book. At the end of Vol 1 pagination starts again at page 1 for Vol 2. Volume 1 has 346 pages, Volume 2, 437 pages, for a total of 783 pages. Both Goodreads and Amazon now show only the number of pages in Vol 2.

I can confirm this by sending you a PDF of the Table of Contents for the book in two volumes, and the last page of Vol 1, showing the number of pages in that volume. I can't attach a PDF to this message, so if it would make it easier for you to have me send it to you another way, please let me know.

I'd really appreciate anything you can do to correct the Goodreads listing.

Just a quick question Gary before I keep on looking. Is that your cover showing? Its just I have noticed a staff member changed the book from 'cloth' to paperback back in 2010 & it looks like a hard cover or possibly cloth to me.

The book cover was added by a librarian in 2014.

Was your edition published in 1951? ISBNs weren't in use till the 60s, not common till the 70s.

The number you have given me for the German book from other sites is truncated - should be 13 digits.

Also, just for your information, we can use info from Amazon & it's subsidiary Book Depository, but not via libri.

Here's the complete 13-digit ISBN for the German book per Amazon: 978-3787321704 (not sure why it got truncated).

The Plutarch cover image in Goodreads and on Amazon is of a hard cover edition copyright 1951: it's the book I have in front of me. There's no separate indication of the pub date. I know that 1951 pre-dates ISBNs, which is why I was surprised to find that Amazon had an ISBN for it. Could it have been reissued? Some re-sellers on Ebay are representing some Classics Club editions as being issued c.1970; I'm not sure how reliable this is, but it's interesting. And, there's no ISBN number in the book itself.

Should you not want to transfer the ISBN information for the Plutarch from Amazon to Goodreads, I hope you can still correct the number of pages.

And thanks for getting back to me so quickly, Carol.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂  | 2332 comments Hi

I'm going to ask the moderator of this group if I can remove the cover & move it to a new edition that I will create for you.

Looking through different editions of Plutarch there are pages and pages of them - & I am not a classical scholar. I am a bit worried I might create an edition that is already here.

I'll just create the info here that we use for adding new books.

Title
* Author(s) name(s) Plutarch. Translator Is Louise Ropes Loomis
* ISBN (or ASIN)
* Publisher Walter Black
* Publication date 1951
* Format Cloth
* Description Can you supply a short description
* Page count I can't confirm on World cat, but I'm going to take your count if you just confirm that your count doesn't include any advertising material or blank pages at the end.

If I'm not allowed to shift the cover shown to what will be your new edition, I may have to ask you to scan your cover. The Amazon one is angled & may only be for Vol 2.

Sorry for miscounting the ISBN 13.

@ rivka is this the best way to handle this?

We cannot move a cover from an existing edition, no.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2332 comments Fair enough. Can I delete the cover (definitely not correct) or should I just leave it alone?

I would leave it. Not clear whether it's the cover or the format which should be changed.

Hi again, Carol.

I'm pretty confident that there's not another existing Goodreads listing for this book, so we should. be OK as regards potential duplicates.

As far as a new listing for the book is concerned, that strikes me as more work than is necessary.

Perhaps it's enough to correct the page count to 783 pages, which I hereby confirm are actual pages of text with no ads or blanks.

I hadn't noticed that the book was labelled as a paperback even though it's cloth bound. If you can correct that too, that'd be great.

Other than that, the book image and brief description are OK as is.

Hope this helps!

Gary

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2332 comments Hi again Gary

Here is your shiny new edition!

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...

Switch to this one & pretend you never saw the other one. (that's what I'm going to do!)

I have put a Librarian Note up (that only Support & Librarians can see) asking for this not to be combined with Vol One or Two. If it ever is, just post in Book Issues & ask for a Librarian to separate for you.

Just one more thing & you can go back to reading.

* If you can scan the cover to your edition, you can add the pic to your photos in your profile & I (or another librarian) can take it from there. If it will take you more than a couple of weeks to organise that, it would be best to make a separate request in the Add Book Covers folder as I will be going away for a few days. :)

A fresh start ... sounds good to me.

About the cover photo -- I've uploaded a cover image to my profile photos as you suggested. This should cover the cover (ha!)

I also wrote a short description of the book, as you suggested in a previous message, and here it is.

Plutarch’s Lives consists of pairs of biographies, one Greek, the other Roman of similar destiny, and to consider their common virtues and flaws. The selection includes 15 biographies as well as ten of Plutarch's essays. This edition of the Lives is a very readable 20th century translation by Louise Ropes Loomis, with an introduction by Edith Hamilton.

Sorry if I wasn't clear - I need a scan of your copy. Otherwise you could upload a photo in your pictures & I will trim it for you.

I'm not a fan of the spine squashed on its side look - although rivka (the moderator of this group) has said they are acceptable.

I would like something like this The Fountain Overflows by Rebecca West I'll add Ms Hamilton now. I'll add your description, but I will have to change the wording slightly as the 'very readable' sounds too much like a book review.

Gary | 7 comments Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ wrote: " ... I need a scan of your copy..."

No problem. I scanned the front cover as you suggested, and uploaded the scanned image to my Profile pictures. You'll find it there. If this wasn't the right place to send it, let me know. BTW my scanner cropped the image automatically.

I get it about the review-sounding remark in my write-up (it was a throw-away comment anyway.) I included the reference to Edith Hamilton because she is a renowned classicist.

It's all coming together, thanks to you!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2332 comments OK cover uploaded.

I'm sure you realise this now, but this was the wrong folder for your request.

Page count requests are usually done by new librarians or Librarians in a Hurry & this was probably why your request was skipped over.

For a book with multiple issues, please post in the Book Issues folder in future. :)
