I read a book series long time ago. A boy and other kids (2 sisters) from a small village. The girls become wizards. Their is a prophecy of someone who will become a powerful wizard. Female wizards live in a castle and seek male wizards to remove their powers. As decades ago a male king wizard nearly destroyed everyone. The power they access is tainted for male wizards and sends them mad. The boy becomes powerful. He travels to other tribes and gains followers. One sister helps him. There is a big battle near end. He fights other bad wizards. Some of this I think I can remember bits.

The Wheel of time series by Robert Jordan? Starts with The Eye of the World.

The Aes Sedai also become divided on how to deal with the Dragon Reborn."

Excellent, I remember now and thanks I knew it had dragon in it somewhere!
