Jim Vuksic | 362 comments The saying: Those who ignore history are condemned to repeat it. is valid and has been proven time and again.

Adolph Hitler (Germany), Joseph Stalin (Russia), Benito Musillini (Italy), and Tojo (Japan) effectively utilized misinformation, rumor, unsubstantiated and altered false facts, and outright lies to gain a substantial following and political power which eventually led to the demise of their national influence and power structure.

I wonder where that may be happening today? Emotion, ignorance, and prejudice should never be substituted for logic, research, statistical analysis, and deductive reasoning.

message 452: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Unfortunately, logic requires starting with true statements. If the initial premise is false, then anything that follows contains the falsehood. The web is a well-known source of falsehoods, and as the recent Fox News case shows, regular news can be outright lies. Even if you go to more "sound" sources you inevitably encounter biases - the news is cherry-picked to support a view.

It may surprise you to know this even happens in science. My PhD research involved entering a debate as to what was the cause of abnormal properties of strained molecules. My work conclusively supported one side, but thanks to one review, it ended up that the other side is now in text books. This was the result of one review, and it reached a conclusion by ignoring anything that disagreed with it, including my work. My job at the time required me to work on what was paying my salary, but much later I wrote a logic analysis which located over 60 different experimental facts that showed they had reached the wrong conclusion. The net result - it could not be published because none of the chemistry journals published logic analyses.

My point is, if this can happen in science, don't be too harsh on everyone else. It is a cultural problem: people do not want the truth, they want to adopt that which is easiest and does NOT require analytical thought because that involves work. We are too lazy.

Everybody's lying. The only rational path forward is to take a cue from Friedrich Nietzsche and assume an attitude of joyous distrust.

A bit of Pinot Grigio should rectify that :)

Unlike Biden that has been on the public teat for 50+ years.

I don't know if the IRS has an intel unit, but in the early to mid 2000s they were hiring people to sit in courtrooms and take notes. The intention being to determine if hidden assets in divorce cases or other areas of law that resulted in financial testimony in open court. My attorney boss and I both saw the hiring ads in Wisconsin.

message 468: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments Watch the guy stammer, and look in his vacant eyes, and there's no question that he's not up to the job of president now or in the future. But they're going to run him anyway just to keep power in Democrats' hands. I saw that Kamala will be his running mate, so if he's declared incompetent, she'll also be a puppet of whoever has been running the country behind the scenes for the past 3 years. Does anyone know who's running things? I'm worried about that. Puppet presidents controlled by ??? And doing a bad job of it.

message 469: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19862 comments Scout wrote: "....Puppet presidents controlled by ???..."

Some would hope not by Hunter and/or CCP :)

message 470: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments Sadly, the CCP may have the goods on him. He's certainly gone easy on them. The committee investigating Hunter keeps coming up with evidence, the latest being that Biden knew about his business dealings, which he's categorically denied even discussing with his son. Who does that? Eats dinner with his son, flies him on Air Force II overseas, and doesn't have that discussion. But you know that big guys like Biden eventually slide by and get away with bad stuff. Nixon was the exception - and what he did was peanuts compared to this. I have to wonder if Biden's running again in hopes of keeping the reins on investigations.

message 475: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments Thanks for the Taibbi interview. Very interesting and enjoyable. This guy was a Bernie supporter, yet he makes many reasonable points. One quote about Russiagate: "People thought everything was permitted in pursuit of getting rid of Donald Trump." That doesn't seem to have changed.

His father was an investigative journalist that worked the NYC area and it was always a pleasure to watch him. Looks like Matt is following in his fathers footsteps.

This illuminating article shows how the enemies of the Western way of life, who have captured many Western institutions, help shape the media narrative:

https://www.hungarianconservative.com...

I would bet my bottom dollar that is how they operate(d) during covid, the so-called climate emergency, and the war in Ukraine.

Any Western political leader who fights back against this sort of calculated evil is going to need balls of steel, like Donald Trump or Viktor Orban.

Unfortunately, and probably understandably, not many people possess that quality, which is why we're seeing run-of-the-mill conservative politicians selling out their ideals, and the mandates they were elected upon.

message 478: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19862 comments These "revelations" are nothing, Beau. A correspondent received an email from an activist group. So what? Imagine you would receive an email with request to praise Biden instead of Ken. You'd shrug, delete and keep going (I hope).
Is Orban a role model? I would consider avoiding Hungary because of him

message 479: by [deleted user] (new)

It's the extent of the messaging, Nik. Unelected pressure groups, like the Soros Foundation, are trying to set the political agenda. They are succeeding because weak-willed politicians are frightened of the press turning on them.

Some of these unelected people who run the pressure groups, like Soros, also have the financial clout to affect policy, as the UK found out in the 90s, and probably later under Truss. Again, weak-willed politicians won't stand up to them.

Victor Orban is the best Western leader, bar none. A brave man, who puts the people who elected him at the top of his agenda.
