Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I am unclear how this is all going to work when this starts. We have certain cards we have to reach in order for the month. How do I know what I should be reading? If we all just pick our own books don't we run the risk of not meeting some of the cards we have to match? Or reading too many books that don't matter because we don't need their qualities? I have 25 books I could choose from on my UNO shelf but it might be helpful to know which numbers are needed as we proceed through the month so I know which to choose.

message 52: by Kaylee (new)

Kaylee Wilson | 621 comments Im gonna fill stuff in as we go and then we can start reading for specific cards once we have a better idea; usually when the mini challenge comes out in the middle of the month is when we really start grinding. If you have anything that fits a color or reverse card thats a great place to start if you need the guidance! We have a lot of 7 8 and 9 cards so anything that fits those is good too

Jodi | 130 comments Just checking in... I’ll do a hello post tomorrow:)

message 54: by Lynne (new)

Lynne | 94 comments Hi everyone! I was on the reserve list and I made it in. This will be my second time doing Uno, and I’m very excited.
I live in Dallas, TX with my fiancé, my baby Genevieve, two cats (I’ve noticed a lot of us have cats!), and dog. I am currently staying home with my daughter but am looking to start a new career.
I mostly read science fiction and fantasy, but I do branch out frequently into other genres, particularly nonfiction science and history and sometimes mysteries.
I have somehow never seen Stand By Me but now feel like I need to watch it!
I’ll check out the spreadsheet when I get home.

Apoorva Uplap (apoorvauplap) | 4 comments Hello everyone,
I'm one of the reserve players put on this team. This is my first time playing the UNO challenge!
I'm from India and I read pretty much all kinds of books (about 5-6 books a month) and am open to any book recommendations as well. Excited to be a part of this team and looking forward to the challenge!

message 59: by Shikha (new)

Shikha Verma | 1 comments Hello everyone, I'm Shikha. This is my first time participating in this challenge. Let's read a lot of books and have fun!!

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments Hi all- I have just been looking at what I am going to read first and I ran into an issue I have never run into before. I have a book on my iPad that I borrowed from my library that Goodreads does not have. Anyone know how to ask Goodreads to add a title?

message 61: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 17 comments Felicity wrote: "Hi all- I have just been looking at what I am going to read first and I ran into an issue I have never run into before. I have a book on my iPad that I borrowed from my library that Goodreads does ..."

I am a Goodreads Librarian so can add the book for you. Can you send me the details/link to the book? :)

message 62: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments Hi Navi- I just emailed you.

Anyone know what they are going to read first?

message 63: by Elena (new)

Elena Akgül | 73 comments I am going to read Anton Chekhov and Peter James first

message 64: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Hi.
I usually read 3 at a time. Probably going to start with one of the longest and two medium pace.

The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer
So You Want to Talk About Race
The Chapo Guide to Revolution: A Manifesto Against Logic, Facts, and Reason (this one is suppose to be funny).

I should start with The Stand since is 1,348 pages long (yikes), but I probably will dedicate a whole week just to this one. Maybe the last week.

Have you set up your UNO Shelf? I guess this will help sort out the spreadsheet, to see how we're doing with the hands.

@Kaylee good luck with you midterms! If you need any help with the group/spreadsheet let me know.

message 65: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 17 comments I am waiting for the details of another group challenge I am participating before picking my first book!

message 66: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I definitely am starting with Transcendent Kingdom since I have to read it for a book club the next week. I will also start an ebook because I need that for bedtime. That will be between Weather by Jenny Offill (appealing because it is short) or The Herd by Andrea Bartz or Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center. I'll read a couple paragraphs of each and then decide.

message 67: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I made an Uno shelf with all the books I might read because I own them or have them out from the library. FYI, when I looked at the book spreadsheet my columns didn't all match up. I would just double check your entries.

message 68: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments @Felicity Book... sampling? I've never done that, and it makes sense when you have several attractive options. I'll definitely try it.

message 69: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments OMG- I have 24 books on my UNO shelf and nothing to read this weekend. Monday cannot come too soon!!!

message 70: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments Anyone know if you can use a book for a color card that is yellow on the goodreads listing but not on the version you are reading?

message 71: by Verónica (new)

Verónica | 417 comments Felicity wrote: "Anyone know if you can use a book for a color card that is yellow on the goodreads listing but not on the version you are reading?"

@Felicity, I saw this in a mod thread:

Regarding the colored Cards: Can the book be any cover...does it have to be the cover for the version you are reading?
It needs to be the edition you are reading.

message 72: by Kaylee (new)

Kaylee Wilson | 621 comments Yes so you need to shelve the edition that youre reading for it to count :)

message 73: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I asked a friend who is a UNO captain about this and she said if the goodreads default cover is yellow, I could use it. The book is The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley and it came to my attention because several people in UNO have posted it as a yellow choice.

message 74: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments She mentioned that the default cover is the rule with audiobooks.

message 75: by Elena (new)

Elena Akgül | 73 comments Reading starts in 2 and a half hours

message 76: by Elena (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I am up (6:25 EST) and starting now!

message 78: by Lynne (new)

Lynne | 94 comments Yay first day of UNO!
I am working on finishing up two books - hopefully today.

message 79: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I finished my first book for UNO and am working on 2 more. Go team! (I know I am not going to read this much as the challenge goes on🤣)

message 80: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 17 comments Yay!!

message 81: by Kaylee (new)

Kaylee Wilson | 621 comments So awesome to see everyone reading!!! Im starting tonight! I have to write a book report for a short book by Thursday and I put off reading it for uno, woops. :))

message 82: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments Sounds great Kaylee. As you can see for me, a short book is a good way to start this challenge.

Had a question for clarification. We only count books that we start after the UNO kickoff today, right? But will there be chances later in the challenge to count books that you start in one month and finish another, like in past challenges ?

message 83: by Vivi (last edited Feb 03, 2021 10:44AM) (new)

Vivi | 137 comments Hi.
Started reading my 1st book -
Written with Regret (The Regret Duet, #1) by Aly Martinez
today too 😊

Yes, only things that you started within the uno challenge count but from here on everything counts; just depends on when you finish something... if that even makes sense lol

message 85: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra | 225 comments Finished my first book... it was an effort. i didn't like it. hope the next one is better than this one.

message 86: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments Sorry to hear that Alejandra. Good for you for getting it done! Happily, I really enjoyed both books I read today. They weren't mind bending but were entertaining.

message 87: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 17 comments Alejandra wrote: "Finished my first book... it was an effort. i didn't like it. hope the next one is better than this one."

I really did not like my first book either lol!

message 88: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments Brave of you starting with a classic, Navi.

message 89: by Elena (new)

Elena Akgül | 73 comments Finished my first book. A classic play, enjoyed it

message 90: by Alejandra (last edited Feb 04, 2021 01:51PM) (new)

Alejandra | 225 comments Ok I finished the rest of the series (what I’m willing to read anyway), it didn’t get better.
I’m on call, so I’ll fill in the info for these books either later tonight or on the weekend. I have a week off next week, so hopefully I’ll be able to relax and read.

message 91: by Jodi (new)

Jodi | 130 comments I lost you all for a bit... our team wasn’t showing up under any of the groups in Uno and I wasn’t getting notifications so yay! Glad to be back haha!

i think it was because no one was commenting. happened the same for me, i couldn't find it, had to go into history and look for it. after commenting it appeared again

message 93: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments Welcome back teammates! I was worried because UNO posted team results and we had no points but then I realized that some teams pick all their books at the beginning and enter them in the official spreadsheet. I like the flexibility of the way we are doing it. And I'm amazed by how much we have read already on Day 3! I have liked everything I have read so far.

message 94: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments I meant to mention that I finished a book that could be for our first color card, 9 green. It was Ask Again, Yes which takes place in New York City. A somewhat sad book about a couple of dysfunctional families but ultimately a story about love and resilience.

message 95: by Kaylee (new)

Kaylee Wilson | 621 comments I’ll try to start putting stuff on the spreadsheet tonight! Yall are awesome for everything youve already done! Woopwoop

message 96: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 17 comments So many books - way to go team :)

message 97: by Navi (new)

Navi (nvsahota) | 17 comments Just a thought. It may make sense for everyone to take a quick look now and again to see which books everyone else has put down on the spreadsheet. If you have read it, mark it off as read in Column Q (i.e., Read by Navi). I am trying to look through everyone's shelves but I don't want to miss anyone:)

message 98: by Felicity (new)

Felicity Larrick | 615 comments We are a well read group. I had two different books the other day that someone was reading that I had read and there was already someone who had read it.

message 99: by Alejandra (new)

Alejandra | 225 comments Any historical romance recommendations? Been unlucky lately with my choices.
I like Christi Caldwell, Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Elizabeth Boyle, Elizabeth Hoyt...
Or paranormal? I love Nalini Singh and Kelley Armstrong.

I highly recommend the Bareknuckle Bastard series by Sarah MacLean!
