I finished. and what an interesting discussion going on here.. Will come back later and reply where I think I could understand what was going on...
nice Manu!
I just finished the London story....
Was delighted to see that Katy Forbes has a comet shaped birthmark on her :P :P :P
Each and every such revelation is adding up to appreciate the genius of sir David Mitchell to think about all that stuff in his debut.

We also get to have a closer look at Tim Cavendish and his elder brother D Cavendish!
When Tim dismissed Marco due to his phone call, we ee that Marco only hears partially about the conversation Tim is having related to paying someone up. How that one was crafted into Cloud Atlas was marvellous!

I still couldn't figure the deal about Alfred and his other self which he chases down ....
(I am getting pretty weird thoughts about that.... blame it on Tenet! Have you two watched Tenet? or Dark?)

also loved some pretty catchy quotes on "Ghostwriters" in London.
I've never been to London, but that detailed descriptions about the city must have been pure pleasure for anyone who stays there or knows the place better.

so far, Mongolia has had the greatest impact on me among all the stories. To the extent that I have started believing I'm hosting one ;) [or I am one!]

How far you've progressed Mak?"
Tokyo ~ simple and without the complexities as compared to other stories.
Holy Mountain ~ Beautiful and sad.
Petersberg ~ this was fun even if it was disconnected but still managed to be quite entertaining.
Night train ~ favorite!

nope. Dark is movie name? or you are talking about that Netflix series?
only Nolan flicks I have watched are Batman trilogy.

the way Mitchell connects his universe, I am thinking/hopeful that whatever went above my head here will make some sense in some other book.
Which Mitchell book are we reading next month? I will sit out if you two decide on Black Swan as I have read that one.

The event where Alfred chases Alfred just passed and it was weird it ended where it started.
I had seen TeneT and it was a bloody bouncer for me. I think i'll have it rewatch it a couple times. Loved Dark however this is something else.
Anyway the part about Cavendish is a bit over the top of my head too. I'll have to read it again

If we go by the below list, i think it has to be Bone Clocks in publication order
Ghostwritten (1999) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
Number9Dream (2001) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
Cloud Atlas (2004) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
Black Swan Green (2006) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet (2010) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
The Bone Clocks (2014) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
Slade House (2015) Hardcover Paperback Kindle
Utopia Avenue (2020)

Mitchell and word weird go hand in hand. one is incomplete without the other. :)

Oh yes my bad it's Number9Dream. Seems like i was drowsy :P
Manu, I was talking about Dark Netflix series.... deals with convoluted timelines in a way that explores the possibility of multiple versions of same person on the same timeline :D
Mak, regarding TeneT!
**spoiler Alert for Tenet**
Watched it a couple of weeks back. Yes off course it is a total bouncer! 10 times (at least!) more complex than Inception! Seems you need to watch it at least 6-7 times to get a grip of whats happening!
I spent 2.5 hrs watching the film... and then around 10 hours searching through other you tube videos and blogs which could help understand a bit.
"Just like the title of the film, the plot of Tenet is palindromic in nature, moving forward in a more standard linear fashion, before reversing backward on itself around the midway point and resolving in a closed-loop by the end."
Check out this guys 5 videos with 3D breakdowns:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4QG...
Each video is 2-3 minutes only, but reveals a great deal on what we see in the film and how it translates plotwise!!!
And then I did a mistake of searching through Neil's timeline :( :( :(
[(view spoiler) ... after which, all that I had understood so far went to nil! (Neil :D)
Went ahead and watched the movie alone the 2nd time (wife refused to watch it again - bole ek baar ka torture bahut hai bas!)... and as expected, got confused even more the 2nd time!!!
Which makes me wonder - how the hell did Nolan think about this film!!! How the hell was it written down on paper as a script!!!
Unbelievable!!!
ok enough ranting about Tenet. Sorry for spamming!

Number9Dream is the next project.
Hope you two would be interested to pursue further into Mitchell's universe. right?

I am still on Clear island. The opening and writing style baffled me... until the connection was revealed. Now it is palatable :)

Hahaha quite an experience.
Fortunately Inception and Interstellar were well within our standards but TeneT is a demon that cannot be tamed.
The only reason why i didn't checkout the videos and logs was because I was unable to watch it with complete concentration due to parallel office work :P
I'll try to watch it again. this time with 100% dedication even though i know it won't make any difference :P
Gorab, god only knows how does Nolan manage to WRITE these movies that we have a hard time even watching thrice!
@Manju
Dark is really really mind boggling and entertaining at the same time just don't watch season 3. 1 & 2 are solid entertainers, i can vouch for that!

Oh yes definitely!
Loving Clear Island very much now. I like characters like Mo. Excited to know that there could be a separate book on her character - already published or maybe upcoming :)
It has such clarity of thoughts... going down on the basics... soilitude... focus... love life family threat corporate... such a good mixed bag. And off course the over the head jargons of quantum cognition.
Seems like a long chapter... i might still be midway only. Loving every moment of it... as against the beginning which I was hating.

how far you are in Clear Island?
I only started enjoying once a connection was made... and then it gathered momentum. Initial few pages were a nightmare.
Even now, there are parts in between which clearly don't make sense, but feels good in hindsight ;)

Yes i am in the initial part of the chapter. Possibly going through the nightmarish section :P

Such beautiful message towards the end and the network David has created throughout the book, carefully weaving characters, stunning!!
hell yeah! We are in perfect sunc. opened Goodreads to comment that i finished clear Island just now. toughest nut to crack but it was freaking awesome!!!
it connected Petersburg, where Marco helped Mo, then connected Mongolia where Mo met Sherry in that train, and a cryptic message about Okinawa and Clear Island - about the spin of two electrons emerging from a common source, however far away they are: between John and me, between Okinawa and Clear Island, Milky way and Andromeda, if one of the particles is spinning down, the other is spinning up.
was that a reference, that since Quasar went down for the gas attack, Mo went up in helicopter...
but then Quasar finally went to a school to talk about computers or something in the end right??

oh 1 more thing... when Mo talked about that dead bat and one person dying related to Buddha... could that be Neal? since she was in Hong Kong that time... yet another connection :)
and sorry Sherry was in holy mountain, not Mongolia.

"loved immensely" - same sentiments :)

and Sherry is the same girl who was travelling to Mongolia right? On a trans with Jasper I think? Then it was Mongolia
Also, one person dying related to Buddha could be Neal as well as the Tea seller in Holy Mountain who reaches at the top to meet Buddha. But this doesn't click well
i thought Sherry and Jasper were the persons in holy mountain, when the old lady was serving some food or beverage to them, and that guy heard about that story of 3 animals who knew the fate of the world.... and immediately started rushing towards Mongolia.
But yeah you are right, they must've been in Mongolia.
Its all khichdi in my head now!

No it wasn't in the tree. The noncorpa exsited in that old lady... and would have transmigrated when the lady handed them tea or something.
Thats why reading it again would be another experience :)
Thats why reading it again would be another experience :)

But remember non-corpa had stated once that I lived with a good person once where I could talk to her. I was her Tree. I'll find the exact para

I returned to my Holy Mountain, possessing knowledge from over a
hundred hosts, but still knowing nothing about my origins. I had tired of
wandering. The Holy Mountain was the only place on Earth I felt any tie to.
For a decade I inhabited the monks who lived on its mountainsides. I led a
tranquil enough life. I found companionship with an old woman who lived
in a tea shack and believed I was a speaking tree. That was the last time I
spoke with a human.
the old lady "believed" the tree was speaking to her.... while the noncorpa was inside her own head. I don't think the noncorpa transmigrates anywhere else other than a human brain. I could be wrong though.
Uh yes! This is where he died and we now know in Petersburg that he died of Diabetes. (Which Gregorsky thought was a joke and sends his henchman Sabutar or whatever to knock off Rudy)
However, even though it says Buddha, I am not sure if it's the same on Holy Mountain. As I had specified before, Buddha has appeared without fail in each and every chapter
Edit: He died Watching the Holy Mountain on the tarmac I think
