It depends how many pages and chapters but maybe like three but I usually still finish the book.

message 52: by Hailey (new)

Hailey Sawyer | 33 comments For me, I like to give a book at least three chapters to hook me. If a book doesn't hook me within those three chapters, I usually drop it.

message 53: by claudia (new)

claudia (claufmontero) i usually read at least 100 pages to decide

☆StarOfElysium☆ (siddjha) | 90 comments The first 50 pages of any book.
If I get the feels I need to connect to the characters then I complete it for sure.

message 55: by Nur Fatin (new)

Nur Fatin (nurfik) | 12 comments mostly (at least) 30% into the book, but there have been books i dnf'ed at 70%—because the first half was good then it went downhill.

champagne_problems4 | 15 comments I usually only read 1 chapter and if it hooks me a little I'll continue

message 57: by Kyrsten Joy (new)

Kyrsten Joy | 15 comments I do 3 chapters to see if it fuels my energy to read it, and if it did not then I'll do double booking, picks up another book till the magic within ignites. char

message 58: by Liz (new)

Liz | 7 comments It really varies for me. I have given up a book after the first chapter because I didn’t like how the female character was already so one-dimensional. I have also read through entire books that I didn’t like, such as The Maze Runner, because it had been on my list and I wanted to like it so badly.

message 59: by A (new)

A | 66 comments 124 pages and if I still don't like it, I goodbye it. If I really can't stand it I'm not gonna force myself to read up to page 124, but if I've heard great stuff about it then I'll give it a chance. If the book is short (less than 240 pages) then I'll give it 50 pages.

message 60: by Princess (new)

Princess Night | 35 comments 50 pages

message 61: by mylittle•dove (new)

mylittle•dove it varies from book to book honestly. i literally dnf-ed a book after reading 70% of it.

message 62: by Olivia (new)

Olivia I give all my books a two chapter chance to grab my attention, and one of my local librarians said that her dad gives every book 100 pages minus however old he is, so that every year that he ages, the book has less time to interest him before he moves on. I will say though, that even if a book grabs me, it has to keep me throughout the book, because if I get halfway through and it becomes a chore to read it, and it isn't fun anymore I will just stop reading it. I have kids now, and I don't get a lot of time for reading, so if it isn't fun, it isn't worth it.

message 63: by [deleted user] (new)

I can't stop reading the book until I get to the end. Unless it's really bad content...then I just stop.

August (Dean's Version) | 118 comments ^^^^
I usually DNF if it still sucks before chapter 3 starts. If I keep going, I finish it

message 65: by AgapeAdrienne (new)

AgapeAdrienne I will try a trick or two to make myself finish it unless it is truly terrible or offensive. Tricks that I use are: skipping a chapter or 2, flip through to the last 1/4 of the book to see if it has any redeeming value then go back to reading as normal, switching to audiobook, putting it down and read a different book then pick it back up later.

T ✩ Handmaiden Of Amidala (tarria) About 200. Last year I didn't DNF a single book though.

message 67: by Argefer93 (new)

Argefer93 | 4 comments 100 pages

message 68: by I'm Funny (new)

I'm Funny | 14 comments ive stopped after two chapters before but it rlly depends on the books

message 69: by Judy (new)

Judy I try my best to get through to the end of the book but when I just get so bored and just can't get through it, I'll DNF it. However in series, I usually get bored halfway though the second or third book and sometimes I just can't finish the series to see the ending so I DNF it

message 70: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Goldstein | 131 comments I like to come back to a book later when im in a different mood if i dont like it after 70 pages or so

message 71: by aava 💌 (new)

aava 💌 maybe like 50 pages

message 72: by Poodilywoots (new)

Poodilywoots I do my best to give it 100 pages, just to give it time to land. I DNF'd Lightlark after 75 recently, I couldn't slog through it anymore.

message 81: by Aryi (new)

Aryi | 19 comments Page three

Lizzy⋆·˚ ༘ * (angeliclizzy) | 13 comments when I’m reading the most boring book I still read the whole thing😭 idk why I just feel like I have to finish it because I used my money to buy it and I feel like it’s going to waste if I just don’t finish it

message 83: by Vismaya (new)

Vismaya | 38 comments I usually persist until the 1st half even if I don't like it. Like a 2nd chance. But tbh I havn't really given up on books that much because I think a lot before reading a book, especially if I'm buying it. I hate reading just half away and abandoning it.

message 84: by halimo ♡ (new)

halimo ♡ (hvlimv) | 6 comments depends on the book but its usually anywhere between 10 - 50 pages.

Adalyn is ridiculous | 6 comments 30 pages but if I feel like it might be good i'll give it 50

message 86: by Anthea (new)

message 90: by Rita (new)

Rita Chapman | 7 comments It depends if I have another book lined up to read!

message 91: by Maureen (new)

Maureen Vercruysse | 118 comments I’ve never DNF’d a book. I always finish regardless of how crappy it might actually be. I don’t know why i feel the need to finish but i simply can’t do it

message 92: by Elisha (new)

Elisha | 2 comments I can read half a book and stop and finish it one year after.

message 93: by Angela (new)

Angela Fenstermaker | 4 comments there's no certain number. If I get an ick or genuinely uncomfortable, I'll stop. the only reason why I wouldn't stop is if I bought the book myself.

message 94: by Rebecca (last edited Apr 19, 2023 02:05PM) (new)

Rebecca (rebeccamontgomery) I used to never dnf, but at some point decided life is too short to suffer through if I'm not enjoying it. There is no specific number for me. I have given up with only a chapter left, but have also quit after the first few pages. Those are rare though. I try to give it a fair chance and go between 50-100 pages.

message 95: by angeline (new)

angeline (ramblingdaydreams) 150 max

message 96: by Tayjah (new)

Tayjah I like to finish the entire book because I read some books where the last 100 pages out of 500 is what made it worth while. I also don’t like quitting half way so might as well read it all.

message 97: by aboutThat12 (new)

aboutThat12 | 52 comments when a book disapoints me I normally end up reading the same paragraph over and over again so thats my sign to stop :)

message 98: by Angie (new)

Angie Marquez | 18 comments It just depends on the book at what percentage I would put it down or DNF it

message 99: by Wolf (new)

Wolf O'Rourc (wolforourc) | 14 comments With millions of books out there, I hate to say I've turned quite ruthless. Three "was" on the first page or other forms of "to be" that the writer could easily replace with stronger verbs will do it for me. It signals an unwillingness from the author to polish their work, which suggests bigger problems later on. Given my huge to-read pile, I won't invest any more time in what I consider amateurish writing. To show the point, I avoided using "was" in this post.

message 100: by Sofie (new)

Sofie (sofielikesbooks) | 83 comments Personally it really depends on the book for me because some books start out really slow and boring and I kind of put them aside and then when I have nothing better to read I'll continue and sometimes it turns out to actually be a really good book (ex. This Vicious Grace, Stolen Time) Other times when it quite literally is just super uninteresting, the author can't keep my attention or it just simply isnt the right book for me I'll put it down when I realize that the book is not something I would want to read. I have a huge TBR list and I've found that usually not enjoying a book means to put it down and read a better one unless its one of the last ones you have left. Although I probably wouldn't take my own advice because that has ended me up in a ton of wasted reads and sometimes even book slumps.
