I'm actually the opposite. If anyone like Obama recommends something, I go the other way. And if a book is a Big Award Winner, I also tend not to read it. However, I do know that some publishers will always have a winner for me. Or an author I will probably like (or appreciate).
If my SIL recommends it, then I MUST read it. Her taste is great, and she introduces me to things that I would not have found on my own. Also, she seeks out recommendations from me, so we have a happy circle.
In the past two years, though- it's been other CBR readers. I wouldn't have even tried Tamsyn Muir and Becky Chambers without them!

My belated brother John and I used to have what we called "Must Reads" - there were no discussions, just pure acceptance and a clearing of the calendar to read the book in question. Around 1989 I handed him an incredible thriller that I had purloined from a friend during that summer in Tahoe, a book no one had heard of titled "Silence of the Lambs". Two years later, he surprised me with tickets to a premiere showing the film at a movie theater on Polk Street (now a gym), San Francisco with the director, Jonathan Demme. Epic memory, thank you for the nudge. I would now say that I love using the comment section from Goodreads on a book I really like for compiling new additions to the to-read lists!
