Sarita | 1386 comments We visite Salzburg and Innsbruck once - just had 2-3 days in Austria and always wanted to go back!

message 52: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I hope that final week of the semester goes well, Davina. So sorry about the hardships! I’ve had seasons like that. They make us stronger. Hang in there!

message 53: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie Thank you Staci.
Oh yes, it is beautiful here. I cherish it too little because I'm so used to it, but I can't wait for summer and when I can visit the lakes again and go hiking in the mountains for a bit! :D
I would love to visit America someday!

Sarita | 1386 comments Do you guys think it will be beneficial to assign/grab rows?

Some of us reads faster than others so don't think we should split everything.

For example:
Staci grabbed row 4.
Andrea: 1-3
Sarita: Trying row 7

It could work with horizontal ships but not so much vertical?

Or for example - I'm trying row 7 - column B:E if first guess is correct?

message 56: by Staci (new)

Staci | 1071 comments Nice job on first review posted!

I'm fine with any approach. Knowing that the board is updated on Mondays and Thursdays helps with strategy. It will be good to get an update later today.

message 57: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Huh. We did all try different portions of the board, didn’t we? I’m cool with whatever. And if we find it works better a different way, then we can adjust on the next board, if we like.

message 58: by Andrea (last edited Feb 04, 2021 07:00AM) (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments One thing that will speed things up is to skip every other spot in a row unless we find a ship to try to take out. This strategy rules out more than just the one target spot, as you can see with what I’ve done so far. There’s no way it can be A1, B2, C1, etc., and we didn’t even have to guess those. That’s why I like doing a checkerboard pattern.

Yes, was just thinking of different ways to tackle this. This also sounds like a good strategy.

I was just thinking aloud. Everyone targeting the same spot vs different areas - but so far we all are selecting different spots :-)

message 60: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Yes, I like what you're saying about searching different areas of the board, Sarita. Great plan!

message 61: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Team Three has found three ships (one sunk), Team Two has found one (none sunk), and we have found two (one sunk).

I'm working on blazing through some audiobooks to pile up some guesses over the weekend. Hoping to have that ship sunk when we get updates on Monday.

What are y'all's reading plans for the weekend? Any particular books you're looking forward to reading?

message 62: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Just finished one book so will take another guess tomorrow. Then hopefully will have some good reading time over the weekend to put a big dent in the new one I will start (and some I’m busy with).

message 63: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Awesome! Glad to hear that, Sarita.

message 64: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Woot woot! Another hit! Staci, you have the magic touch.

For sure! Well done on your hit as well Andrea!

Hi, I am good thanks, I have just finished The Rose of Winslow Street by Elizabeth Camden The Rose of Winslow Street by Elizabeth Camden and I am about to startFor such a time as this by Ginny Aiken For Such a Time as This (Women of Hope #1) by Ginny Aiken .
Have you read any of these books?

message 68: by Andrea (last edited Feb 05, 2021 08:39AM) (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Tricia, hi! Will you please change your target spot from B1? It can’t possibly be that one as we’ve already ruled it out with the checkerboard pattern. How about you work on one of these rows: 5, 8, 9, or 10. Thanks!

I have not read either of those books, but they have gorgeous covers.

ok, I change the target spot, I hope it's ok

message 70: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Yes, that’s perfect, thank you! What book is up next for you?

I’m trying to finish up The Cumberland Bride by Shannon McNear today.

It’s great to meet you!

message 71: by Yannick Tricia (last edited Feb 05, 2021 11:05AM) (new)

Yannick Tricia | 53 comments I am currently reading For such a time as this by Ginny Aiken. The Cumberland bride seems interesting, I have not read any book of the series Daughters of mayflower.

Nice to meet you too!

message 72: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments The series has been hit and miss for me. Cumberland is shaping up to be one of the better ones. My favorite so far is The Pirate Bride.

I don’t think I’ve tried Ginny Aiken before. Is the book enjoyable so far?

message 73: by Yannick Tricia (new)

Yannick Tricia | 53 comments So far it's good, it's a retelling of the biblical story of Esther in the 19th century

message 74: by Staci (new)

Staci | 1071 comments I'm an Elizabeth Camden fan for sure. I haven't yet read anything by Ginny Aiken. Just finished a novella by Joanna Barker which doesn't qualify for our game, but will be starting on something that will qualify soon.

message 75: by Yannick Tricia (new)

Yannick Tricia | 53 comments I like Elizabeth Camden too, Against the tide is my favourite:)

message 76: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments So I changed my mind. I'm finishing Stranded by Dani Pettrey today and refocusing on Cumberland tomorrow. I was in the mood for suspense today. Hehe.

message 77: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I reached my goal of four books over the weekend. I'm trying to blaze through one more audio today (hopefully before updates).

Goal for the week: 3 books before Thursday's update.

What are your goals for the week, friends?

message 78: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Wow Andrea, you are a machine! Hope to have one, maybe two finished by Thursday. Otherwise one by Thursday and one for Monday.

message 79: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Great plans, Sarita!

Aw, thanks. I've had a few library audios to cruise through, and I can listen to those at 2x+ speed and retain my comprehension. I wish I could read Kindle and paperback books that fast.

I just got an editing job for the next few weeks, so my reading pace might slow significantly. That's one reason I was pushing so hard this past work-free weekend.

message 80: by Staci (new)

Staci | 1071 comments Congrats on the editing job Andrea!

I'm currently reading a physical book and a Kindle book. Hope to finish both prior to Thursday.

message 81: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Thank you!

Wonderful plans, Staci!

message 82: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments I have two more spots to finish ruling out the top three rows (H3 and J3). I think I’ll help chip away at the bottom couple of rows after that. Anyone have objections to that? Or other thoughts of where I should aim next?

message 83: by Staci (new)

Staci | 1071 comments Sounds like a good plan. Rule out those last two spots and then move to the bottom.

message 84: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Thanks, Staci!

message 85: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Agree, think should try covering bottom - I focused there but not reading as much as you!

message 86: by Sarita (last edited Feb 08, 2021 10:10PM) (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Ship update:

Ships:
Carrier (5 holes)
Battleship (4 holes) - still to find
Cruiser (3 holes)
Submarine (3 holes) - think we are one away
Destroyer (2 holes) - still to find

message 87: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Thanks, Sarita! I appreciate your thoughts as well as the ship update. The Destroyer is always the toughest to find, I think. Hopefully on one of our boards we'll find it first.

message 88: by Staci (new)

Staci | 1071 comments Thanks for the update Sarita! I should be able to get the submarine on Thursday. :-)

Agree that the Destroyer is the toughest to find!!

Happy reading all.

message 89: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Not going to make it to three books by today, but my second will be done tonight. Two out of three's not bad. ;)

I'm looking to finish 2-4 over the weekend, around my editing work and household chores.

How's it coming for y'all? Are you finding fantastic books to enjoy or subpar ones to forget?

I've got a mix of the two going at the moment. A reread of Karen Witemeyer's Full Steam Ahead, which I'm loving just as much as the first time I read it back in 2014, and The Lady in Residence by Allison Pittman. The latter is not really my type of story. It's a ghost story, and one of the leads has turned out to be a gutter-mouthed alcoholic. Not a character I can root for. I was hoping the Doors to the Past would be a great series, but it's not starting off on a keeper for me. I'm hopeful about some upcoming titles in the series, though, as their premises sound much more up my alley.

message 90: by Sarita (last edited Feb 11, 2021 09:13PM) (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments I also saw that on that first book, which was why I first did not request it and then decided to try. But if it is really about Ghosts I might skip that one and try the rest.

I'm about 45min away from finishing another book. We are going camping, so hoping that I get some reading in to finish Ford (The Montana Marshalls, #3) by Susan May Warren and also maybe Opening Moves (Patrick Bowers Files, #0.5) by Steven James (not far from the end but reading this one slower with someone).

message 91: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Have fun on your camping trip, Sarita! It's much too cold here for that right now. I believe Monday night is supposed to be -1 degree (F) or so. Brr! I hope your trip finds much warmer weather! Y'all are in summer, right? being in the Southern Hemisphere.

The mystery in The Lady in Residence does revolve around a ghost. Not sure if it's a "real" ghost or a faked thing(view spoiler), but it's just rubbing me the wrong way.

Yes summer here though I see they are predicting a thunder storm for today but tomorrow will be close to 104F. At least it is next to a river! But luckily also close to a town so if the heat is too much can go for a drive in the aircon car.

I'm not really a fan of camping but my husband loves it and with two boys... Looking forward to in about 5 years where I can sit and read the whole day while they catch fish or whatever men does.

message 93: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Oh, those reading days will be so wonderful when you get there in a few years! I hope the thunderstorm doesn't cause any issues for the trip. Stay safe and have fun!

message 94: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Staci, I see you've read The Lady in Residence by Allison Pittman - is it similar to Jaime Ho Wright's?

message 95: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments The tone of The Lady in Residence and The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus are slightly similar.

message 96: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments I don't mind that eerie feeling. The Curse of Misty Wayfair by Jaime Jo Wright was also like that and had a reasonable outcome. If the Lady in Residence is similar to that, it would be ok.

The Haunting of Bonaventure Circus was also ok, there was a reasonable outcome. The only thing I didn't like about that one was that that one character said she can speak to the dead.

message 97: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments That speaking to the dead thing is kind of like the "seeing ghosts" thing in The Lady in Residence; I can say those two marks are definitely similar. You may enjoy the mystery of the story from Dini's perspective.

It's not hitting the mark for me, but that doesn't mean it won't be a stellar hit for other readers. Every book has its fans, and I'm happy when books I don't like find readers who love them. Maybe go into Lady with caution?

message 98: by Sarita (new)

Sarita | 1386 comments Andrea wrote: "That speaking to the dead thing is kind of like the "seeing ghosts" thing in The Lady in Residence; I can say those two marks are definitely similar. You may enjoy the mystery of the story from Din..."

Yes definitely will. I always try a book for a few chapters :-)

message 99: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Cox (andreacox) | 4741 comments Same. If it doesn't hook me by then and it isn't a NetGalley or other review book, then I don't finish it.

message 100: by Vinnie (new)

Vinnie I'm trying to finish a few of my Netgalley books right now. They are not fiction, but so so good.
Almost done with Gentle and Lowly The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers by Dane C. Ortlund and I have begun For the Body Recovering a Theology of Gender, Sexuality, and the Human Body by Timothy C Tennent
