knight and squire

A plague has past through Novel Kingdom, on the edge of Lake Lexicon. The heroes who were previously keeping the kingdom safe from monsters have been particularly badly hit and Queen Skye has put out a call for new heroes to come and maintain the safety of the kingdom.

In recognition of the fact that the kingdom is in a perilous state with all the new monsters, she is planning to pair experienced adventurers with the newcomers to help them find their way around the kingdom while they settle in.

How to take part
Post below saying whether you are a newcomer to the kingdom or an experienced hero. We will pair you up to complete the tasks together. Both of you will receive the same rewards from completions.

Tasks
1. Say hello in the buddy thread set up for you
2. Introduce yourself in the Tavern (the experienced player does not need to do this again!)
3. Newcomer reaches level 2 experience
4. Newcomer levels up a weapon
5. Newcomer levels up both weapons
6. Newcomer defeats their first monster
7. Together spell out one of NOVEL, ROLE, PLAY, GAME using standard spell out rules
8. Visit the melting pot and suggest a quest idea that you have worked on together
9. The experienced player gives a gift to the newcomer to help with a quest (e.g. potion/egg/magic item)
10. Both partners read a book that involves a teacher or student, or that has a link to a video game (i.e. Ready Player One or The Last Wish). It does not have to be the same book. The mentor can also read a book with the letters AS in the title.

Rewards
These are additive (i.e when you complete hard, in total you will have 23 XP, 10 gold and a major heal potion).

Tutorial: Complete 2 tasks for 2XP
Easy: Complete 4 tasks for 4XP
Intermediate: Complete 7 tasks for 7XP and 10 gold
Hard: Complete 10 tasks for 10 XP and a major heal potion

Natasha | 1140 comments Hi Abbie! I hope you're doing well. I'm excited to have another apprentice! :)

Ghost in the Stacks Thanks!

Sorry I was confused on where to actually go.

message 5: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments No worries! Glad you made it! :)

Ghost in the Stacks Okay, I have stoped by the Tavern.

How do I actually start in order to "level up"?

message 7: by Natasha (last edited Jan 24, 2021 01:07PM) (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments Make sure to create a thread for your journey so you can keep track of everything.

It depends on leveling your character up or your weapon up.

You start with level 0 weapons. This is how you level up your weapons:

Magic Staff
Gain levels for your magic staff by creating taller pyramids of series reads (books don't have to be from the same series, even within a level)
LVL 1: Read 1 book that's #1 in the series.
LVL 2: Add a #1 and #2 in a series.
LVL 3: Add a #1, #2 and #3 in a series.

Sword
Gain levels by reading taller pyramids of page numbers. A book that's 350 pages may count for a 300+ book, a 200+ book or a 100+ book.
LVL 1: Read 1 book that's 100+ pages.
LVL 2: Read an additional 1 book that's 100+ pages and 1 book that's 200+ pages.
LVL 3: Read 1 book that's 100+ pages , 1 book that's 200+ pages and 1 book that's 300+ pages.

Natasha | 1140 comments You start at level 1 and need 5 experience points to level up to level up. You can beat monsters and do quests.

The Hello, my name is quest is super easy and gets you 3 exp.

You can find quests here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

The Hello, my name is quest is found under the story quests. I would recommend doing a simple quest to get a feel for doing the quests. Some quests are listed that are expired, but it will say that next to the quest name.

Ghost in the Stacks Okay thanks!

Ghost in the Stacks I have off tomorrow and hopefully i can get a thread set up and get started.

message 11: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments I'd recommend looking at how others have their threads set up. There is a lot to keep track of and it's helpful to see how others have done it.

message 12: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments Hi Abbie. Did you have any luck getting a thread started or a way to keep track of your journey? Some people use spreadsheets to keep track.

Ghost in the Stacks Natasha wrote: "Hi Abbie. Did you have any luck getting a thread started or a way to keep track of your journey? Some people use spreadsheets to keep track."

I just set up thread this morning. I am behind...work..uggg...

message 15: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments No worries.

I see you are doing the Gather Berries quest. I believe you can only get experience for one of those words, but you can double check with the mods.

I recommend creating a post to keep track of your book reserve. Also, a post for the items and pets you have or will have in the future.

message 16: by Ghost in the Stacks (last edited Feb 01, 2021 02:44PM) (new)

Ghost in the Stacks Thanks! I must have mistead that, I thought I needed to do all of them.

What do you mean by Reserve?

Ghost in the Stacks I tried doing The Hello my name is quest, but the thread is closed to new comments 🤷🏼‍♀️

message 18: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments It looks like they edited the quest and they have a new thread now here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

A book reserve is where you can keep books that you've read that don't fit any current quests. When you start a new quests, you can use books from the book reserve to fulfill the requirements unless it specifically says new books must be used.

The official definition is:

Book Reserve
The best part about Novel Kingdom is their fabulous research department. They've constructed a Tote of Infinite Books and handed them out to all the new recruits. This allows you to store up any books you've read until you're ready to use them. Just keep them listed at the bottom of your adventure log until they're applied to a task.

Ghost in the Stacks Oh, okay cool!

Natasha | 1140 comments Hi Abbie. Have you had any luck leveling up one or both of your weapons?

Have you tried fighting a monster yet? It's helpful to level up your weapons for monster fighting.

Ghost in the Stacks Sorry i got behind in catching my challeges up and this Craxy storm here in Texas put me farthur behind. Trying to get updated today!

How do you fight a Monstsr? I cant figure it out. I see a list on monsters, but it makes no sense to me on what I am supposed to do

message 26: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments I hope you're doing okay. That storm in Texas was terrible. No worries about being behind.

Here is an example of a monster fight:

Attack Monster - 6 Attack 10 Health - Reward: 3 Experience
Hero: Level 3 Magic Staff (5 Attack) Level 4 Sword (6 Attack), 10 Health

•Hero Attacks Monster with Magic Staff (5 Attack) => Monster: 5 Health Remaining
•Monster Attacks Hero (6 Attack) => Hero: 4 Health Remaining
•Hero Attacks Monster with Sword (6 Attack) => Monster: Dead
•Hero: Gain 3 Experience.

Common Monster Type: Last Killed: XX/XX/XXXX, Available Next: XX/XX/XXXX + 1 week

You can copy and paste that and put in the monster health and attack and your health and attack.

Natasha | 1140 comments Which word would you like to spell out? I suggest ROLE or GAME.

Ghost in the Stacks I am fine with either one. Take 2 letters each?

I sm sorry but this makes no sense to me. I feel like a compkete idiot.

I can see the monsters stuff but i have no idea:
A) what my heath is???
B) what my attacks are????

I copied and pasted and added, but I dont think its right since the levels are different from the copy🤦

• Goblin - A green little angry fellow that likes to stab weary (and unweary) travelers with sharp pointy sticks.
6 Attack 10 Health - Reward: 1 Experience, 1 Goblin Bone

Attack Monster - 6 Attack 10 Health - Reward: 3 Experience
Hero: Level 1 Magic Staff (5 Attack) Level 1 Sword (6 Attack), 10 Health

•Hero Attacks Monster with Magic Staff (5 Attack) => Monster: 5 Health Remaining

message 31: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments This is the health you have per level and how much you need to level up:

LVL 1 - 0 XP - max HP 10
LVL 2 - 5 XP - max HP 12
LVL 3 - 15 XP - max HP 14
LVL 4 - 30 XP - max HP 16
LVL 5 - 45 XP - max HP 18
LVL 6 - 90 XP - max HP 20
LVL 7 - 135 XP - max HP 22
LVL 8 - 225 XP - max HP 24
LVL 9 - 360 XP - max HP 26
LVL 10 - 585 XP - max HP 28
LVL 11 - 945 XP - max HP 30
LVL 12 - 1,530 XP - max HP 32
LVL 13 - 2,475 XP - max HP 34
LVL 14 - 4,005 XP - max HP 36
LVL 15 - 6,480 XP - max HP 38

And these are how the weapons work:

Attack Power of Magic Staff / Sword = Level of the Weapon + 2 (a universal bonus)
You start your adventure with LVL 0 Weapons -> their Attack Power is 0 + 2 = 2 AP
After you upgrade the weapon to LVL 1 -> Attack power = 1 + 2 = 3 AP

message 32: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments And please don't feel like an idiot. It's a lot to take in.

message 33: by Natasha (new)

Natasha | 1140 comments I would keep track of your level and health in your thread.

This is how I do it:

Stats
Level 8
HP: 24/24
Exp: 280/360

It looks like you leveled up since you completed a quest for six exp. So you'd have 12 HP and your weapons are both level 1 so they have 3 attack: level 1 + 2 (universal bonus) so a fight with say a sewer rat (easy to kill) would look like this:

Sewer Rat - 3 Attack 5 Health - Reward: 1 Experience
Abbie: Level 1 Magic Staff, (3 Attack), Level 1 Sword (3 Attack)

•Abbie Attacks Sewer Rat with Magic Staff (3 Attack) => Sewer Rat: 2 Health Remaining
•Sewer Rat Attacks Hero (3 Attack) => Hero: 9 Health Remaining
Abbie Attacks Sewer Rat with Magic Staff (3 Attack) => Sewer Rat: 0 Health Remaining
•Abbie: Gain 1 Experience.

Sewer Rat: Last Killed: 3/5/2021, Available Next: 3/12/2021

Natasha | 1140 comments You can use potions during or after to recover your health.

This explains the different potions and how to heal: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Natasha | 1140 comments And we can spell out GAME.

I'll take G and A and you can take M and E. Please let me know if that works for you.

Natasha | 1140 comments Did you have an idea for a quest? I was thinking something related to spring since spring is almost here. Perhaps reading books with flowers and gardening implements on the covers.
