Duncan/Graham and Catherine/Janet were both severely traumatized as children, which eventually led to their murderous behavior. Did the system or their families fail them? If so, in what way? Not every traumatized child grows up to have homicidal tendencies (i.e., Kim, Tracy). What made them different? Was one more sympathetic than the other?

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) That is a very interesting question. Why do some traumatized and damaged people go on to hurt other people. Is there an underlying genetic cause or is the damage so great they lash out to try and gain power over overs? I'm sure health professionals endlessly research and debate this.

The fact that Kim had the positive nurturing of Keith and Erica shows how the foster system sometimes gets it right and how important it is to a damaged child's development.

The conundrum for me was Catherine/Janet who by her own account came from a loving, nurturing family. Her trauma and fear outweighed all of that. And there’s Kim, who only received that love and nurturing for a short time but it left an indelible impact. Kim’s experience made her stronger, Catherine weaker and Duncan/Graham permanently damaged.

Brenda ~The Sisters~Book Witch I agree this is a very interesting question and on a psychological side very complex. Yes Lisa it's a huge debate and research and I think they are questions with no answers and not researches have no answers for because there are too many variables and each have something to do with each other.

Sharon Kallenberger Marzola | 3485 comments I don't have anything to add to these comments. The basic psychology classes I took in school, don't give me enough knowledge to comment.

What I do think is there is something in each of us that gives us the strength to fight to better our self and the weakness to revolt and give up. We all decide which one wins everyday.
