Before visiting the Westerley Farm, Kim and her team rescue a kidnapped boy from a sex trafficker. What is the significance of this scene to the overall story?

Maybe the difference in the family situations of the people involved.

Negib comes from a loving family who love and support him and never gave up on finding him. Whereas the killer had a disturbed mother who through her mental illness greatly damaged her son.

That's a good comparison, Lisa. I never thought about it.

What occurred to me (later of course) was how happy I felt with his rescue and I moved on but then reflected on that child’s fate after. We so often close the books on these events, not really thinking about the nightmare ahead of these children.

By the end of the book, I began worrying for Negrib. It was remarkable how the illustrations of Catherine & Duncan as well as Kim & Tracy made me reconsider this first scene.

I did not think about this at all till now and missed that it might have some significance to the story. I was wondering why Kim was reflecting on few childhoods were idea, and most kids suffer some kind of emotional trauma but they don't allow the "cold sharp blade of revenge to carve away their hearts" So that has me thing that is the significances of it.

Great insight. I didn't think about the scene at first. It seemed like an intro to get Kim's team on the mandatory body farm training. OK this case is done now move on to administrative/HR stuff.

Looking back it is easy to see the comparisons among the various adults who were traumatized as kids. How some children have the inner strength to turn their life around. I see Kim and Tracy using their revenge/past for good. Kim seeks justice as a cop, and Tracy tries to shine a light on misdeeds through her journalism.

I’ve come to learn that this author doesn’t do things gratuitously, which makes me try to see meaning in those things that don’t seem to mean much. She’s a very clever theme writer.
