I would like to recommend this book to all those who seek a simple, beautiful read either alone or with children. There aren't many words but there is lots of meaning.
I look at this book with my twins regularly. We spend time talking about each page, even when there are no words on the page. What is the cat doing? Where is he going? What can he see?
The message is about finding truth but it doesn't say what that truth is - it could be anything (although the drawings are of Christian iconography because this was written by a monk). I am not a believer in any religion but I still love this book. Truth is personal. Finding the light is personal. The light could mean anything you want it to mean. Love, death, faith, truth, peace.
I don't know what my children think, I haven't asked them to put their reactions into words because that would mean analysing, and I prefer them to sit with the book and the pictures and thoughts without asking for a verbal explanation of their feelings.
I think this is a good book for the current time. It illustrates a simple, secluded life and ends in positivity and beauty.
Great for kids and adults of all ages, but I'd say especially ages 5 - 10.
