Kaley (kaleyamo) | 1571 comments Does anyone want to claim any of the color cards?

Just a reminder, these are the color cards we have for February:
7 Blue - Kimber
3 Red - Gwen
0 Yellow - Kaley
9 Yellow - Franziska
2 Green - Janine
5 Green - Kimber
6 Green - Gwen
7 Green - Gwen

WD4 #1 - Kaley (duplicating 3 Red)
WD4 #2 - Gwen (duplicating 9 Yellow)
WD4 #3 - Megan

We also have to duplicate 3 of those for our Wild Draw 4 cards.

I’ll give everyone a few days to claim and then I’ll start looking for books to fill in the unclaimed gaps. I do have two currently that will work but I want to let everyone else claim what they want first!

The numbers in the color card follow the same rules as the regular number cards. So to work for 2 Green that book would have to fit the requirements for a 2 (#2 in series, character first or last name starting with T, author first or last name starting with T, set in a place that starts with T)

Gwen | 316 comments I'm interested in reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid and I think that would fit for the 7 Green card. I'll keep looking for others.

Kimberly~☆♡Love of Books♡☆ (kimberbooklover) | 347 comments ok so its not a series bk. so it wont work.

Just let me know thanks!:)

What does the letter T have to do with the # 2?

The color cards are a little harder because not only do they have to have the right color cover, they have to follow the number rules for UNO as well. So in order for a book to fit the 2 Green card (for example) it has to have a green cover AND follow the rules for the number 2 (start with a T, book 2 in a series, character with a T, etc).

The list for what all the numbers mean is on the first page of this thread, under the link UNO rules.

I played last year and so I hope this is helpful. Maybe Kaley or Franziska can explain better.

Ok thank you so much!! Ill go back and check that out.

Gwen | 316 comments Some other books I have on hand to read that might fit a couple of the color cards are:

3 Red: The Hundred Secret Senses The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan (H in title)

0 Yellow: Island Beneath the Sea Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende (Main character is Zarite)

6 Green: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See (S in title and author)

I don't think I can read all of these (including The Seven Husbands book above) but I probably can read two. Lets see what others have before I commit to anything...

I think that’s a really good explanation, or do someone need some clarifications with the rules or something?

message 113: by Franziska (new)

Franziska (chaoschild) | 136 comments I think I have something for #9 Yellow, I just have to check if it is enough yellow:
It Devours! (Welcome to Night Vale, #2) by Joseph Fink , which is set in Night Vale and a character’s name starts with N as well.

It’s 57.5% yellow, so I would claim the yellow #9 spot, if that’s okay for everyone

Thanks for the assist, Gwen!

Here's the full list of rules for convenience. For the most part, the letters correlate to the first letter of the number when spelled out. (Z for zero, O for one) with a few exceptions when two numbers start with the same letter (H for three, I for five, etc.):

O (Zero)
Read a book that:
- has a 0 or Zero in the title
- has a title starting with Z
- has an author first name or surname starts with Z
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with Z
- is set in a place name starting with Z
- is a "stand-alone" book (i.e. not part of a series)

1 (One)
Read a book that:
- has a 1 or One in the title
- has a title starting with O
- has an author first name or surname starts with O
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with O
- is set in a place name starting with O
- is book 1 in a series

2 (Two)
Read a book that:
- has a 2 or Two in the title
- has a title starting with T
- has an author first name or surname starts with T
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with T
- is set in a place name starting with T
- is book 2 in a series

3 (Three)
Read a book that:
- has a 3 or Three in the title
- has a title starting with H
- has an author first name or surname starts with H
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with H
- is set in a place name starting with H
- is book 3 in a series

4 (Four)
Read a book that:
- has a 4 or Four in the title
- has a title starting with F
- has an author first name or surname starts with F
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with F
- is set in a place name starting with F
- is book 4 in a series

5 (Five)
Read a book that:
- has a 5 or Five in the title
- has a title starting with I
- has an author first name or surname starts with I
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with I
- is set in a place name starting with I
- is book 5 in a series

6 (Six)
Read a book that:
- has a 6 or Six in the title
- has a title starting with S
- has an author first name or surname starts with S
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with S
- is set in a place name starting with S
- is book 6 in a series

7 (Seven)
Read a book that:
- has a 7 or Seven in the title
- has a title starting with V
- has an author first name or surname starts with V
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with V
- is set in a place name starting with V
- is book 7 in a series

8 (Eight)

- has an 8 or Eight in the title
- has a title starting with E
- has an author first name or surname starts with E
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with E
- is set in a place name starting with E
- is book 8 in a series

9 (Nine)
Read a book that:
- has a 9 or Nine in the title
- has a title starting with N
- has an author first name or surname starts with N
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with N
- is set in a place name starting with N
- is book 9 in a series

Skip
Read a book that:
- has a title starting with K or P
- has an author first name or surname starts with K or P
- has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with K or P
- is set in a place name starting with K or P
OR you can choose to "skip" reading a book for this cards (and get no points for this card)

Draw 2
Use the same book for two cards in this hand (and get points for both cards)

Reverse
One member of your team must read a book another team member has already read

Wild
Read a book that can fit for any of the cards in that SAME hand (i.e. you are duplicating one of the cards in that same hand)

Wild draw four
Read a book that can fit for any of the coloured cards you have that month (i.e. you are duplicating one of your coloured cards. Each coloured card can only be duplicated once)

Coloured cards
Special coloured cards will be randomly provided each month. for these cards you need to read for the card number (as above) and the book must also have a coloured cover for the colour specified (blue, red, yellow or green)

That will work for 7 since it has Seven in the title!

That is any three that we have for February, yes. But each one can only be duplicated once -- so it has to be three different ones.

It doesn't have to be part of a series. It just has to fit one of the requirements, not all of them!

In a Holidaze by Christina Lauren will actually work for 5 Green because it has a green cover and fits the requirement for 5 because the title starts with I. So I can put you down for that one. Color cards with 5 are actually one of the hardest ones to cover, so this is perfect!

I'm not sure The Rules of Magic (Practical Magic, #0.2) by Alice Hoffman will fit any color cards this month, unless there is a character with a Z or N name once you start reading. You can definitely still read it this month and we can use it for a regular non-color card! From what I can tell just from looking at the book description, it will fit 1 (character last name Owens), 2 (Title starting with T), 3 (Author last name Hoffman), 4 (character Franny), 5 (character Isabelle), 6 (character Susanna), or 7 (character Vincent).
Or if you want, you can hold it till March and hope we get a 2 Yellow, 3 Yellow, 4 Yellow, 5 Yellow, 6 Yellow, or 7 Yellow! Completely up to you.

message 135: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | 47 comments I often read giant bricks (the book I'm currently reading is 800+ pages) so I don't read as many books as most of you... I also get easily overwhelmed by having to choose books in advance to claim certain spots, so if it's okay with everyone you can use my books to fit in whatever task is open and available.

That's how I did it in the past, I just want to make sure it's still okay. 🙂

So just read what you want and let us know all the categories it will.work for when you post it
Im presuming the last week Kaley will tell.us if we short on anything in particular so we can try and find it

Gwen | 316 comments I can commit to the following:

3 Red with The Hundred Secret Senses The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan (H in title)

6 Green with Snow Flower and the Secret Fan Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See (S in title)

7 Green with The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Seven in title)

I'm torn between the two yellow cards with:

0 Yellow Island Beneath the Sea Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende (MC Zarite)

and/or

9 Yellow Recursion Recursion by Blake Crouch (Setting NYC)

I think I'd rather read Recursion than Island Beneath the Sea but can read either one (or neither one!), depending on what we need.

Perfectly fine! I actually don’t like to claim regular numbered cards because it works out much easier for me to just put them where they fit best. Color cards are my only exception because those are more difficult to fit without a little planning. But you are perfectly fine to just read what you want and then I can put it where it fits best. That’s what I prefer anyway :)

Ok! I’ll mark you down. Do you know which edition you’ll be doing? I noticed the one you currently have shelved (default edition) didn’t have a page count. If you’re using that edition I’ll just have to have to get proof of page count from you and have a Goodreads librarian add the page count. If you’re using the Kindle edition then it’s fine, you’ll just have to switch it to that edition once you’ve read it :)
