The Perks Of Being A Book Addict discussion
ARCHIVE - UNO 2021

Team Terminator

Welcome! To answer your shelf question — you can work on it as you go. (For example I personally usually don’t put books on that shelf until I’m reading them, but everyone is different.) You’re definitely not committed to any book in particular — so if you added one you’d planned to read but end up needing to take it off for whatever reason, you can. I won’t post books to our official spreadsheet until they’ve been read, so it doesn’t need to be on the shelf until you’re done with it.

I have another question -- do we make a post for books we plan to read before we read them so that you can sort out what card to use them for or do we only post books we have finished?

My name's Catherine, I'm a 22-year-old student currently on a break from school. Thus, I have more time to read and I'm excited to get started.

My name's Catherine, I'm a 2..."
So, seeing your username, you are a triathlete? I always wanted to try the triathlon, but I fell in love with marathon running (which I hopefully can do as soon as my body is fully recovered from pregnancy and birth and stuff).

This is my third or fourth time playing UNO.
I particularly like to cover the difficult letter/color combos. It makes me step outside my comfort zone.
I live in Indianap..."
Just a random fact, I’ve visited Bloomington, Indiana (and stayed there nearly 2 months) because my boyfriend was a visiting professor there. I loved it! :)

Me neither, this is such a popular challenge!

These are the letters to remember: Z, O, T, H, F, I, S, V, E, N, K, & P. These are the letters that correlate for the numbered cards 0-9 and the Skip card. When you're reading, be on the lookout for titles, author first and last, character first and last, and main settings that start with any of those letters.
Draw 2 — No one actually reads for this card. This card just allows us to use the same book for two cards in a hand.
So, for example, say we have a hand that has a Draw 2, 1, and 3, and I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone — I could use that one book for both 1 (first in series) and 3 (H title) because of the Draw 2.
(You can see an example on the "Example" tab of our group spreadsheet. Hand 2 has a Draw 2 card you can look at.
Reverse — This is reading a book that anyone else on your team has already read. This is why it's beneficial to have your teammates as friends...because when you go to a book's main page, it will tell you which of your friends have read it. I will go through each book everyone posts and check for this anyway as a backup, so if you can't figure out how to tell, don't worry!
Wild — This just means that whatever book I place here has to fit for any card in the same hand. So, for example, our first hand is 4, 7, 5, Wild, 5, 1, and 3. Whatever I place for the Wild card has to fit the requirements for either 4, 7, 5, 1, or 3. Don't worry about reading anything specific for this either — I will place in something that fits.
Wild Draw 4 — This means we have to duplicate one of our color cards for the month. We have eight color cards for Feb. — 7 Blue, 3 Red, 0 Yellow, 9 Yellow, 2 Green, 5 Green, 6 Green, and 7 Green. Whatever we use for this must fit the requirements of one of those cards — and we can only use each one once.
Color cards — The number on these must fit the requirements for the corresponding number card, and the cover must also be more than 50% of that color. So, for example, our 7 Blue card — whatever we use for this must have a cover that is more than 50% blue and must fit for the 7 card requirements (title starting with V, author first or last name starting with V, etc.)
I don't like to claim cards beforehand. With the flexibility in card requirements, almost all books will work for something, so don't worry about reading something to fit a specific card. The only exception I make is for color cover cards -- since those are a little more difficult, I like to have those planned out in advance. (So if you have one you want to read for in February, shout it out below!)
When you finish a book, you'll post it to this thread in the following format.
Book:
Author:
Date Read:
Cards it fits:
(If it has a cover color, please note that here as well)
So, for example...
Book: Heartless
Author: Marissa Meyer
Date read: Feb. 1, 2020
Cards it fits:
0 - standalone
3 - H title
Skip - character Catherine Pinkerton
I will then look at all the potential options for that book decide how to best use it for our hands and post it to the official spreadsheet.
That was a lot of information, but hopefully it helps to clarify things a little bit. If you have any questions, let me know. I'm here to help!

Anything any teammate has read before at any time. As long as it's marked as read on their shelves before you start reading it, it's allowable. It does not have to be read by them during this challenge.

If you aren't sure about the amount of color on the cover, you can try Tiny Eye Color Extractor:
Tiny Eye link
You'll need to right click on the image of your book cover (on it's GR page), and choose Copy Image Location. Paste that into the url box on the website. It will show you colors, but you'll need to un-click the two boxes under the colors that exclude background color.

If you're on a phone you can save the image of the book and upload it it where it says Upload File on the webpage.

Unfortunately it says this book

Unfortunately it says this book

You didn't un-check the two boxes below the colors. "Exclude background color from extracted colors"

That said, I think most of those would be viable options. The only four I'm not completely certain about are:

That's not to say they can't be used. They're just a close enough call on the 50/50 rule that I'm not comfortable making the call by myself. If the team agrees they're enough of that color, then that'll be enough. If we can't agree, I can take them to the captains group and check there.
BUT you certainly do not have to take on all the color cards yourself! So don't think that you have to find replacements for the ones that don't work. It's a team effort :)
For example, I have a book I've been planning to read that'll work for 3 Red:

So I'd be willing to take on 3 Red. (Or a Wild Draw 4 card that duplicates 3 Red) I just wanted to give everyone a chance to claim first before I claim anything.

I have a 2 hours trip in a train tonight, I'll have a better look righthen.

I think im all sorted now Em....most of my books fornthis challenge will have to work in with my others that have specific themes for the week ..but i have my trusty notebook and pen so I'll be ok 😄😄

I only Have 1 green book

and one yellow

Few reds.

(I did post this before but forgot to attach the covers)
But when we start I'll read anything just guide me because the rules r confusing for a first timer. Thanks:)
Blue Books:

To me these R blue but not sure.

For February, that's it. They usually increase the number of hands by one each round. But we will have the mini challenge eventually where we can earn more points -- but there will be a maximum allowed points per round, cuz once we've finished our hands/mini challenge for the month, we're done till the next month!
You are correct that we have to finish a hand completely before we can get points for the next hand. So when I place our read books in hands, I will place them that way. There may be a few exceptions with cards that are harder to fill (5s and Reverse, in particular) where I may fill those up in later hands before our earlier hands are completed. But I don't think we'll have any trouble completing the hands, so it shouldn't be an issue. (And if for some reason it is, I'll move those around at the end of the month to make sure we can get all the points we can.)

I only Have 1 green book"
I don't think The Mystery of Mrs. Christie is quite red enough.
The rest should work though! As long as this is the cover you have for the Stephen King book:

No need to list the blue ones if you aren't considering them for February!

Yes, I'm a triathlete, but I haven't been working out much since Covid 19. I'd love to complete a marathon one day as I want to be able to do an olympic-distance triathlon.

In one of my groups we can only use kindle editions ..in MM we always use the highest edition ...
So thought I'd best check

Phew!!!! I dont always have the best relationship with spreadsheets 😄😄

For each number card
has a character with a first name, surname or nickname starting with ?????
What do you mean by character..all the other challenges i do have asked for 2 MCs only ( all romance books )

You use the edition you actually read. So if the edition you read is 100+ pages, you should be good.

You can read it at any time! We don’t have to read the books in order of hands. As long as it’s read within the month, it’s fine!

This is defined as any character who is meaningful to the story. So it can be a secondary character as long as they have meaning. (To quote an example from the mods, someone who holds a door open for a character once wouldn’t count. But a MC’s friend, family member, etc. should all work.)
