Yes, I forgot it was 07/02/2021 and 3 stars. I read the whole day so I was able finish 3 books in 1 day.

Also I could read Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, #1) by Robin Sloan for
Wild draw 4- 4 Yellow if it fits

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Thanks Anubha. I'll add the details.

I read Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore quite awhile ago and I don't remember a F character. But you can certainly read it anyway if you want to.

It has 4 in title which fits 4 yellow card, one needs either the character 4 or the alphabet F. But anyway, there is a character named Fedorov

message 154: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments I'm afraid they don't count the 4 in the title because it isn't free standing. But Federov would work. :D

I've adapted to the American way on GR, therefore I tend to screw up on my accounting program. Should probably be the other way around. :D

Quoting the information on the official UNO page..

"5. Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com or more than 3 hours of audio using a reputable website (e.g. audible, overdrive). Children's books checked in previous years can be seen on this shelf uno-childrens"

And according to Goodreads the Tale of the Bettle the Bard is for middle grade genre not in Children's. The word limit is for Children's. The book is 100+ pages.

That's why I picked the book but if it's still not included. That's ok.

message 167: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments The book has Childrens as a MPG, therefore it is considered a children's book. I will double check, but that is the rule I have always been given before.

message 168: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Sorry Anubha, confirmed with the mods, middle grade is still considered a children's book. Although it is over 100 pages in length, AR Bookfinder shows it as 12,483 words. So we can't use it. The other children's series you read was more than long enough, so it's just this one book we can't use so far. Sorry.

It's cool! I'll remove it from the shelf. In my country there is a huge difference between children's for primary, and middle grade for secondary, and then there is YA for senior secondary. I might have been oblivious to the American genres though. Anyway, am about to reach my reading potential for this month's uno challenge. Have read 8 books, will finish the claimed cards soon :)

The Willoughbys by Lois Lowry
I finished these 2 today so please let me know whether they can be added before I add the details

I am kind of already swamped with work for my Ph.D thesis so I will only look up the details if they were to be included. 😅

message 171: by Allison Ann (last edited Feb 09, 2021 10:31AM) (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments The Witching Place: A Fatal Folio is fine but The Willoughbys is 1000 words too short I'm afraid.

If you want to check Childrens books before reading them, you can look here and look at the word count. It has to be more than 25,000. :D

We only go by the GR classifications, so if enough people mark it as Childrens, it doesn't matter what the author intended, we have to treat it as a children's book.

Hahaha it's not that am picking children's books or I want to read them, am finishing books from my physical library. Am not a picky reader, so I read from every genre. XD But yes, I will keep up with 25,000 word count in future. I just can't read romance books other than that most books are random picks. Since, its feb I will force myself to pick some romance books tho x3

I understand what you are saying. The best solution is I would ask here after reading whether I should add a book to uno shelf here or not. I will continue to read both short and long books cuz I honestly read what am in the mood for and I check with GR details for the book.

message 175: by Allison Ann (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Please continue to read whatever you want Anubha. We won't have any trouble making our goals and I will always warn you if a book can't be used. :D I'm not much of a romance reader either, though I may throw something into the mix around Valentine's Day also.

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Back to the 80s! February Mini Challenge

This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players. This month we are getting our 80s reading hat on!.

We have given each team a popular book from the 1980s.

As a team, you need to try and read as many books that you can connect with your 1980s book as possible. The ways the books "connect" is completely open to interpretation.

Creativity is the key to the challenge, not rules.

For example; Team XYZ is assigned The Handmaid's Tale.
They read books by Canadian authors, sci-fi MPG, books with something red on the cover, dystopian books, books where a young female is in an arranged relationship with an older male, a book where two characters do something in secret etc.

You don't need a unique reason for each book read and connected. So in the above example, we could read and connect more than one MPG Sci-Fi books (for example) to claim the mini challenge points.

For each book read and connected you will receive 10 points. As a team you can read a maximum of 40 books for this mini challenge.

If one of your team members also reads (and finishes) your assigned 80s book during the mini challenge, you will receive 30 bonus points. (There is only 30 points per team so although more than 1 team member is welcome to read the book, there are no extra points on offer)

◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on February 14, 9am UTC (countdown is here) and before March 1 at 9am UTC (when the March UNO month begins).

◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books for what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ The usual book length rules apply
◈ Team spreadsheets will be updated with a mini challenge tab so that you can track your books and claim your points

Allison Ann | 1245 comments Our book is The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera

Anyone interested in reading it for 30 points? I probably have a copy somewhere from my pretentious university days. It's really not a great book IMO. Ah well. At least I can think of a few links. Anyone a big fan of adultery in novels?

I need another book for book to movie so I can read it. BUT I've just ordered it from the library so I might not have it for at least another week as it is not in my local library. We are lucky though that my library is open for collecting and returns despite corona.

I've also ordered it in Danish but I would prefer to read it in English.

As long as you think you can get it and read it by the end of February, that will work. Also, since it was originally written in Czech and translated, any translated books will work for points in this challenge. :D So whatever Danish books you've been saving up, now's the time for them. :D

so would any romance work? It does have romance as MPG

message 193: by Allison Ann (last edited Feb 15, 2021 07:41AM) (new)

Allison Ann | 1245 comments I don't consider it a romance, but 420 people do. So.... yes?

It can definitely be linked to a "romance" with infidelity.

Male authors

MPG of classics

Books made into movies

Hat on the cover. :D

Takes place in Europe

Character moves to new city/country

Banned books

Titles starting with U

Titles with 5 words

Titles with an adjective

I read the book almost 30 years ago, so I don't really remember much of the plot, so I'm sure there are more possibilities.

It won an award from the Los Angeles Times, here are other winners
