He was an Anchorite mole. The Horologists knew it, but brought him anyway...so the Anchorites could murder him in the chapel and spare Esther Little some time to mount her final attack? Why the Blu Tack? Just to make him think the Horologists really bought the ruse?

padding to inflate the chapter with more confusion. I'm lead to believe the whole chapter was meant to be a satire on fantasy novels but if it was i really didn't get the joke, just the disappointment
